It was the Tuesday night eight-ball league at our local pool hall. Each of our teams posted a seven for the first match of five for the evening. Sevens are considered the master of the game of pool. They are respected and listened to with earnest. Not all sevens are good communicators. But almost all get along with everyone and are always happy to give advice when asked. Tonight’s match promised to be one to watch because of the high skill level involved. It is our APA version of a semi-pro event when two of the players compete.

As the match got started the players pocketed the straightforward opportunities. The first to make a mistake gave the other a chance to run out and win. In the first game each made a mistake and the other failed to win on their first turn. It took about three innings before our seven won the first game. But the other seven took the second. And the two traded wins and made many a defensive shot to gain any advantage they could. I found it interesting that our player who was an older player showed very little emotion. The other team’s player started to show frustration by the eighth game of the match. In the nine game which was the deciding game, our player had the other rattled by all the defensive moves he made. This turned out to be the deciding factor when our opponent missed his shot and left a possible shot for our seven. He easily made the shot and won the match.

This level of play should be watched by all the lower-level players. They can see how the defensive shot can sometimes help in gaining a ball in hand situation because the other player was unable to connect with one of their object balls. They would also see what kind of english the seven is using on a particular shot.

Most sevens have an average of fifteen or more years playing very well to get to a skill level seven in the APA. Many of them have been playing twenty plus years in pool and come into the APA becoming sevens in just a few short months. Others take several years to attain the same skill level status. It is always rewarding to watch two sevens play each other. The observant can learn shots that they were not aware of and can use someday for themselves.
