A Lullaby

I am sailing across the deep blue sea,

In a pretty yacht made especially for me,

With a little cabin and pure white sails,

I am off to spot the whales,

Porpoises and dolphins,

Creatures great and small,

Come with me and we’ll see them all!

Sail with me, across the deep blue sea,

What adventures there will be!

How The Poem Came To Be.

Whilst looking after my granddaughter as a baby, I would have to hold her in my arms and rock her to sleep. There she lay, her wide eyes fixed on mine, long, dark lashes lining her warm, pink cheeks, eyelids drooping every now and then, and suddenly opening as she fought sleep.

A selection of gentle lullabies softly sounded in the background, enhanced by low lighting and drawn curtains; music my daughter had recorded for bedtime. Yet, the little one remained drowsy, and not fully asleep; and as I gently lowered her relaxed body down into the cot, she awoke; every time!

Eventually, the music stopped, and I would have to take over the task of the main tune-maker. After several nights of stepping around her cot, songs and words materialized into this little poem, which became a song, sung to a tune, of which I cannot tell you anything; it is a well-known tune, and if I could, I would sing it for you.

Now my standard piece when putting grandchildren to bed, (there are two waiting-in-the-wings), my lullaby is destined to soothe tired minds and bodies at the end of the day; my hope is that the next two will be falling asleep as I sing the first round!
