Here’s where I’m supposed to set up these random lyrics to make them seem like a part of a significant, meaningful, and coherent thesis. Okay. An HSP feels music in a transcendent way. So HSP … empathy … feelings … appreciate perspectives … emotion … memories … rock’n’roll … eminent meaning.
Okay?
Let’s go.
Lyrics that Give Me Goose Bumps
Backstreets
Remember all the movies, Terry, we’d go see
Trying to learn to walk like the heroes we thought we had to be
Well, after all this time, to find we’re just like all the rest
Stranded in the park, and forced to confess
To hiding on the backstreets
Hiding on the backstreets
Where we swore forever friends
On the backstreets until the end
Bruce Springsteen
Born to Run
The first verse above is what I credit as the inspiration to become a writer. It made me believe that telling stories was worth a sacrifice.
Bad
My favorite non-Springsteen song.
If I could throw this lifeless lifeline to the wind
Leave this heart of clay
See you walk, walk away
Into the night
And through the rain
Into the half-light
And through the flame
If I could through myself
Set your spirit free, I’d lead your heart away
See you break, break away
Into the light
And to the day
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
To let it go
And so to fade away
To let it go
And so, fade away

Lyrics that Move Me in an NSFW Way
Right in Time
Not a day goes by I don’t think about you
You left your mark on me it’s permanent a tattoo
Pierce the skin and the blood runs through
Oh my baby
I take off my watch and my earrings
My bracelets and everything
Lie on my back and moan at the ceiling
Oh my baby
The way you move it’s right in time
The way you move it’s right in time
It’s right in time with me

Lyrics that Make Me Cry
Backstreets
We swore forever friends
On the backstreets until the end
Bruce Springsteen
Born to Run
As a teenager, this was pain from the imaginary betrayal from relationships that had never happened. This was where Bruce would adlib a rant longer than the song, filled with so much venom that it would become a classic breakup song each night. The adlib begins at 5:15.
But on Bruce’s last tour, a moment of magical synchronicity. Bruce and I did the same thing. We reframed these final lyrics.
We swore forever friends
On the backstreets until the end
Instead of the angry rant, he would make a eulogy/dedication to the memory of the only remaining member of his first band who had recently passed away.
Until the ennnd
Now I’ve got all your old books
And I got your 45s
And I carry everything else right here
(refers to his heart)
Right here
I carry it right here
Until the ennnd
Until the ennnd
Until the ennnd
I saw Bruce do this in Brooklyn with my stepson, whose favorite song is Backstreets.
I reframed it for myself a few years ago. It is now a positive affirmation. I am no longer married to or in contact with his mother, but he and I (and his sister) are forever friends … on the backstreets until the end.
Atlantic City
Sometimes, it makes me cry.
Now our luck may have died and our love may be cold
But with you, forever I’ll stay
We’ll be goin’ out where the sands turn to gold
But put your stockings on ’cause it might get cold

Sarah
My best friend from high school recently passed away. She was the first person who told me they loved me who didn’t have to. The night she told me, she gave me my first Springsteen bootleg, a cassette tape she stole from her brother. This was the bootleg’s most significant revelation:
Racing in the Street
Tonight, tonight the highway’s bright
Out of our way mister you best keep
Cause summer’s gone and the time is right
For racin’ in the street
Bruce Springsteen
Darkness on the Edge of Town
And this is a song Bruce wrote about friendship the year Sarah and I met.
No Surrender
Alternate 3rd verse (Live 1975-’85)
Now on the street tonight the lights grow dim
The walls of my room are closing in
But it’s good to see your smiling face and to hear your voice again
We could sleep in the twilight by the riverside
With a wide-open country in our hearts
And these romantic dreams in our heads
Bruce Springsteen
Live 1975–1985
Songs with Varying Permutations of Rhyme and Reason
Visions of Johanna
Rhyme and reason
Lights flicker from the opposite loft
In this room the heat pipes just cough
The country music station plays soft
But there’s nothing, really nothing to turn off
Bob Dylan
Blonde on Blonde
Blinded by the Light
Rhyme with no reason
Some all-hot half-shot was headin’ for a hot spot snappin‘ his fingers clappin‘ his hands
And some fleshpot mascot was tied into a lover’s knot with a whatnot in her hand
And now young Scott with a slingshot finally found a tender spot and throws his lover in the sand
And some bloodshot forget-me-not whispers, “Daddy’s within earshot, save the buckshot, turn up the band”
From my Springsteen Buddy Ken from his analysis above.
Let’s start with that first line, because it may be the most astonishing line of the whole song. In those mere fifteen words, we have:
- a double quadruple internal rhyme (all-hot, half-shot, hot spot; fleshpot, mascot, knot, whatnot)
- followed by a double internal rhyme (snappin’ and clappin’)
-threaded with quintuple alliteration (hot, half, headin’, hot, hands)
