A Lone Swan Looking for Friends on the River
An encounter with a beautiful creature while paddling on the water

The weather wasn’t all gloss and sunshine but I really wanted to go out on the river. It had been too long since we last went for a splash in the water and a few clouds wouldn’t stop me today.
My latest decision on quitting my office job and becoming a full-time freelancer was the best choice I made for my personal development even though it meant being away from my partner for 5 days a week. At least for the next month or so.
To embrace those two days we have together more we decided to make Tuesdays our date nights, or days. We’ll do something fun in the morning/afternoon and go for a nice dinner in the evening.
Today was such a day. We packed our inflatables in the car and drove down to the river Main. Of course, the sun was beating down on us while we were inflating the paddleboard and the kayak. As always, I started thinking of getting an electric pump while sweating. But then I tell myself, pumping up the board is exercise too, which is good for my body.

And there we were again. Back in the water. Or let’s say on the water. Because on this calm river not much is getting wet except for our feet.
Clouds were moving back in serving some shade while we were gently paddling downriver. We haven’t been on this side yet, so it was interesting watching the shoreline.

There’s a road passing the other side of the river but not many cars are driving by. A bicycle path is also right on the riverbank where families come past.

On our side, several small bays with lovely beach sand are inviting one for a stopover and some rest in the shade of big trees. It all seems like pristine nature. Here on the river.

Humans have taken over a lot of the riverbanks but they left a small stretch of wilderness onshore. For birds to live and breed and for trees to grow and create fresh air.

I was just behind my husband when I saw a swan on the other side of the river slowly but surely swimming towards us. Very surprised to see such a bird coming straight to us knowing these animals are usually rather shy.
The only times I do see swans close to humans onshore is when they are being fed. Also, I usually see them in couples, rarely ever do I see one swan alone. But here he is. No partner to be seen.
And the swan is heading straight for us. Swimming in between the two of us, turning the head and looking all curious at us. He came that close I could even get a great shot of him with my wide-angle lens of the GoPro.

We continued our journey downriver and when I looked back I could see the swan following us with some distance. It seemed like he found some friends and didn’t want to lose us.
He wasn’t in a rush but was following in our direction.
Eventually, we decided to turn around since we had gone quite a way and had to go against the current upriver now. The swan was waiting for us next to a tiny island and greeted us again as we came past. One more circle around each of us and we continued the paddle.
The swan always behind us. Our new won friend.

It was such a great encounter I truly cherished meeting this lone swan and hope to see him again when we come back for a paddle.

Later that evening we went back to the picturesque town of Miltenberg and enjoyed a lovely dinner with a view onto the river and the skies turning orange during sunset.
