A Letter to My Younger Self

There are some things you need to know

Dear younger me,

I don’t really know how to start this all off. I am trying to remember what it was like to be you. I know you are not ready to hear some of this, but there are some things you need to know. So, I guess, I’ll just jump right in.

Work ethic

You’re lazy.

I’m sorry to be so blunt, but it’s better if you just admit it now. You won’t always be lazy. In fact, you will grow up to have a great work ethic. The problem is that you are going to regret some things if you don’t develop that work ethic a little bit earlier.

In the future, you will spend several years working a very hard warehouse job with decent income for an entry level position. However, you will do this with a family and barely pay the bills. You can do better. Go ahead and get that warehouse job as soon as you graduate.

Live tight and save all the money you can.

Don’t worry about college. Older you doesn’t have a degree or debt, and it turns out we didn’t need it. If you do this, you will be able to give to your wife and family what I always wanted to, but never could.

Grow up

Yes, you heard me right. You are going to find love. Believe me, she is the most beautiful creature you will ever lay eyes on.

You need to hear me on this!

Start becoming the husband she deserves right now. I have spent most of my marriage learning how not to be a husband. You can spend these years learning the right way.

You’re immature.

It hurts to hear it, I know. But you will save yourself a lot of heartache if you put in the growth work now.

It’s going to get rough

When things go downhill, it will happen fast. You will experience times of desperately searching for a job to no avail. Many people that you think support you right now will turn on you. Your family is going to experience trauma as a result of trying to do the right thing. I’d like to tell you that we heal, but the jury’s still out on that.

There will be nights that you ask God to please just take you. Then you will feel guilty because you know your family would be wrecked if that would happen.

This leads me to the next thing I want to say.

God will be the reason you make it

There are so many nights you will cry out to God, “You are all I have!” That is what will keep you going. You will realize He is all you need, but you will have to lose faith in everything else to see it.

Right now the thought of heaven is kind of strange and intimidating to you. When you become me it will be full of joy and anticipation.

There’s so much more

There’s so much more I want to tell you, but I can’t give away everything.

The mystery of life is half the fun!

I will leave you with this. You will have many nights where you don’t think you will make it. Let this letter be a reminder that you will. I know because I have. Stay strong, little man.

Until next time,

Future You.
