A Letter to My Younger Self

Trust that life will unfold as it’s meant to be

“We are like flowers, an open connection to our higher self, but without connection, just like without water and sunlight, the flower can’t grow to it’s full potential.” — Unknown

It’s so beautiful to come across the glimpses of wisdom I captured in my journals throughout my youth and university years. I’ve grown so much as a person and now beginning to honor the power of letting go and being myself, knowing that I’ve integrated these experiences and my studies into who I am today.

It has been a fruitful and evolving journey to come to this state of peace that I now have. This state of understanding that I am enough — that success is the simplicity of enjoying life and tuning into joyful moments. Knowing that I have everything that I need within me, and always seeking from within rather than being determined by external circumstances.

Looking back, I realized I was so addicted to being busy. I constantly felt the need to ‘do enough’ and to feel like ‘I made it’. I put these all in quotation marks as they are all defined by what you think of YOU rather than what you have achieved.

“Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.”― Maya Angelou

Going through pages of my journals, I realized there was this empowering self within me that was trying to rise and express my true self, one that believes in me, one that nurtures and supports me. I see spurts of “I am amazing!” but quickly enough, they fall back into the default stream of thoughts “ I feel overwhelmed. I’m not good enough. I am afraid…”

I wish that my younger self believed in herself just a little more, giving herself the belief and love she so willingly gave to others. I wished that my younger self could see that her life was unfolding perfectly at each moment, that she can let go knowing that she is enough, and had done enough.

I wish that my younger self simply enjoyed what she was doing, rather than feeling the need to ‘prove’ anything or to anyone. I embrace all that there is now, and it isn’t until a continued practice of self-work, meditation, and healing that I feel such a strong connection to my inner being and developed this newfound sense of self-love.

I used to suffer so much from anxiety, waking up in the wee hours of the night wondering about the next part of my life, or the pangs of panic about something that has yet to be completed. I let it all go now. I have so much compassion for this younger self as she did what she could at that time.

There are deeper layers to this, knowing that our childhood experiences greatly shape our self-esteem and confidence. But I’ve learned enough to be no longer trapped in internal conflicts or external determinants. Finding that stillness has become my top priority in life and to anyone that are busy striving for success, remember to allow enough rest and relaxation in the process, and what you want will follow.
