A Letter to My Children This Christmas

I love you

To my dear children,

Do you remember Christmas Eve? I do. I often think about it more than Christmas Day. I remember walking hand-in-hand through the town. I can smell the mulled wine. I can taste the chestnuts. I can see your love.

I feel your innocent elation. It was a Christmas card in motion. My heart was whole. You would carry the logs. We didn’t even need a fire. Your love was enough. Your love warmed the house for an age. I told you stories and you looked on at me, amazed. Your eyes as curious as the doe.

Your mother would bake. She had traditions I didn’t understand. English traditions. I learned a new one each Christmas. I think of her, too, each Christmas. She gave me the gift of you, and you gave me love and acceptance. The first time you called me your mother was on Christmas Eve.

Thank you, mum.

My heart danced. It was a Christmas gift full of goodness beyond comprehension. You changed my life. You made me a mother.

Oh, how I wish I could put a bike together, a doll house, and leave refreshments for the big man. The man who you swore you spied from your window. The man who I worked so hard, so elaborately, to convince you was real, and you hung off every word, until you didn’t.

I’ve made many mistakes. In the cold winter winds, I’ve strayed from the path. In the brume of sadness, I lost my way. I wandered the icey fields alone and got lost, but you were never far from my mind. You kept me warm from the cold. You gave me shelter from the storm of tears. You are the emerging spring in the arid desert.

I wish you to know that I love you despite all I have been. I love you with the beauty of a thousand Christmases. There is much wrong, but there is a mile of good for every inch of bad. You are my joy. You are my world.

Take all of my mistakes as learning experiences to catapult you into happiness. Your happiness is my greatest wish.

I love you, so much.

Mum.

To all my friends on/at Medium and those who have lifted me, I could never be so honest and open about my life if you had not given me the safe space to do so. I wish you the warmest of Christmases and the very best for the New Year.

You are residents of my heart.

My life has changed for the better, and you played a part. I love you all.

Sincerely, with love,

Doro.
