A lament to stand with Ukrainians
A prayer poem

Yesterday I read this great little article by Chuck Kralik, Author about how much God loves us. It gives a brief account of God’s love for us, as expressed and offered in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I agree absolutely that God loves us wherever we are, whatever we’ve done. I just wondered how that would feel if I was living in Ukraine, or another war zone at the moment. I wrote this lament, an echo of Jeremiah’s laments found in scripture, and the ones found in the Psalms.
God’s love reaches me even here? Where words are haunting, not sincere, empty promises and empty hearts, are where evildoing really starts.
God’s love reaches me even here? Where crucifixion is real and very near, Angelic music rings hollow now, in a place where bullets through people plough,
God’s love reaches me even here? On the furthest corner of deepest fear, where hope is lost and family dead, where I cannot move, only tears are shed.
I don’t believe it, it cannot be true. Can you not see, to say, “God loves you!”? Misery, horror, death has become me, God, are you there? Hear my plea!
Free this land from strife and war, Let the killing end, be no more, Heal our children and our soul, Make us new, God, make us whole.
