A Kitchen Thought That Created A Story!
Story Of My Heart Pure Fiction Challenge
When I read about the first Pure Fiction writer’s challenge, I was excited & honored to be tagged to join a fun activity. The first fiction piece that came to mind was a story I had done months ago. I’ve only done a few fiction stories since I joined Medium in 2020. The Unusual Bullets is my favorite fictional piece that I’ve done so far.
Daniella Cressman had done a couple of fictional stories (at the time), which made me want to start writing some stories of my own. So I ask myself, what should I write about?
After letting my mind wander for hours. The idea I had about hamburger grease came to me. For years, I had this idea on how hamburger grease felt like you were getting shot by a gun/rifle (even though I wouldn’t know what a bullet felt like, and I NEVER want to find out).
Having that grease pop on your arm or in your face isn’t a pleasant feeling — if you have the stove burner on medium or very high. That’s how the title of the story was created. From there, the story slowly started to come to me. I wrote some of the plot down, so I wouldn’t lose the idea & could come back to work on it later.
When I came back to the story, the creativity bug began to take over me. I was having a lot of fun putting this piece together. The excitement I had writing it was pushing me to complete it. The main character’s last name came from an NBA player who was on the Charlotte Hornets last season named Brad Wannamaker. I just really liked that last name. It just sounded so cool to me.
Writing the battle part was so much fun! I just thought of the many war movies I had seen over the years; and used those images to create a dangerous atmosphere for the main character. Once I felt like I had captured that scene very well,
My favorite part of writing this story; was coming up with the twist. The war scene wasn’t real, it was just a wild imagination that the main character had, while he was cooking hamburger patties for himself & his girlfriend. After an intense beginning & middle, I wanted to create a calm ending for the main character & his lady friend.
When I finished writing this story, I felt so proud of it. To be able to capture that creative spark, type it down on my laptop & share it with my readers is a wonderful feeling.
I haven't read The Unusual Bullets in a while. I keep thinking of the next writing idea I have in my head & bringing it to life. Every now and then, it’s good to reflect on our writing creations. Writing this made me relive the joy I had when I was putting it together.
Thank you, KL Simmons and JA Vassili for creating this challenge. I’m glad to be a part of it!
