Summary

The provided text is a contemplative poem reflecting on the potential future of artificial intelligence in society, questioning the implications of emotionless robotic entities in roles traditionally held by humans, such as advisors, doctors, judges, writers, and even deities.

Abstract

The poem "A.I. 2.0" delves into the nature of artificial intelligence, presenting it as a robotic advisor that operates strictly within its programming, devoid of human emotions or reactions. It raises concerns about the future where AI could replace human roles, such as medical professionals, legal authorities, creative writers, and spiritual figures, without the essential human qualities of sympathy, clemency, passion, and mercy. The author muses on the potential loss of human touch in these critical aspects of life, highlighting the limitations and risks of relying on AI that lacks the ability to truly reciprocate human interactions or emotions.

Opinions

  • The author expresses skepticism about the benefits of AI, suggesting that it may lead to a future where essential human qualities are absent from key societal roles.
  • There is a clear concern about the emotional disconnect of AI, as the author points out the futility of expecting empathetic responses from current digital assistants like Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant.
  • The poem conveys a sense of apprehension about the potential for AI to operate without the nuanced human traits that are crucial in professions such as healthcare, justice, creativity, and spirituality.
  • The author seems to question the wisdom of creating AI systems that could one day surpass human control, hinting at a possible dystopian future where AI holds power without understanding or valuing human life.

The Robo-advisor just does what it

Has been programmed to do, reticently.

You can scream or curse or throw

Objects at it, just as I do at

My Alexa and other like-minded

variations of personal digital assistants

(i.e., Siri and “Hello! Google”,

With their sans-emotion incompetence),

But you can never get a response

(Desired or otherwise) if it

Doesn’t wish to reciprocate.

Is this the future of our existence?

Robo-doctors without sympathy?

Robo-judges without clemency?

Robo-writers without passion?

And Robo-gods without mercy?
