A Human Touch For Stanley

This Story is a response to the writing prompt about having a human touch in life. I tried to stay true to the prompt to the best of my imagination. I hope this story teaches people something and is a joy to read.

Stanley Morgan was a young man with a lot of dreams. He was born into a rich family. He had everything his heart ever wanted. He had a lot of money as the son of the Magnolia family. He loved his childhood friends who lived in his hometown and all the things he did.

But there was something missing in Stanley Morgan’s life. Stanley loved the place where he was born and raised. He didn’t seem to mind staying with his parents who were now past their prime. Stanley Morgan was the type that kept to himself, so perhaps the others were out partying, but not Stanley.

His parents who were close to him, had seemingly taught him many practical things about Life. While growing up Stanley was a bit of a loner. Stuck with his nose in his books, he was very bookish and spent a lot of time in libraries. It was Funny how he ended up becoming a writer. He chose writing as he came from a family of lawyers, but he knew he wanted to have a secure, and stable life.

Stanley decided he would do a 2-month long on-site course, which required him to move. Stanley Morgan made the decision himself, after consulting with friends and family. He was going to go to Boston and leave his family back home in Alabama for a little while.

The course was related to ‘caring’ and being a ‘carer’. Stanley had always been bookish, and being a typical INFJ who loved writing, the next thing on his list was obviously anything with a human touch. Growing up, Stanley missed that and he felt that the course would teach him a thing or two about life.

One day, soon after arriving in Boston, Stanley’s apartment was still a mess. There were socks strewn everywhere, and no place to put clothes. Stanley decided to switch on his Laptop. He asked Alexa a question, while he was vacuuming the carpet- “Alexa what’s the date today?”

He felt like it was funny that Alexa asked him to repeat himself. “Did you not hear what I said Alexa?” he asked out loud again while putting things like mugs and towels in their place. The apartment was looking way tidier now.

Alexa replied, “Sorry Stanley, I did not hear what you said.” Not that Stanley Morgan hated technology, he compared his own non-existent life to the common sense that Alexa probably used to answer questions people asked her. He applauded his own decision to do the course on caring for people who needed it. The way things worked at present, something was definitely amiss.

Not only with the Laptop which needed attention for ages, but also with the world in general. In today’s world, people seem to think that if they had technology they would have everything. But there were some things that technology couldn’t deliver, and science could not explain.

Stanley looked out the window of his small but beautiful apartment. It was 5 o’clock in the evening, and he thought he needed to get some coffee. There happened to be a Diner close-by which looked pretty crowded the last time he passed by.

He took a seat opposite a woman with the most interesting face he had ever seen. She was busy looking at something on her iPad, and she did not notice him coming to take a seat next to her. The Diner was pretty crowded and people did this sort of thing at this place.

She did not mind at all. She looked at him inquisitively and asked him if he was new to the area. Stanley replied by saying that he was utterly and completely new to Boston and that he had left his family back home in Alabama.

Stanley Morgan continued talking to the nice-looking woman. She batted her eyelids and told him with all honesty that she too was a writer like he was. She waved her hands about when she spoke, and Stanley decided to confide in her that he wanted to be a carer, because he liked people.

Stanley was by far happy that he had made a new friend. They spoke for hours, and Stanley confided again that as he was new there, he tried to keep himself busy with random stuff around the house. Her name was Joanne Tecki and there were lots of things she had seen of the world that she wanted to share with him as well. Stanley looked at his watch — it was 9:00 p.m. already.

Stanley Morgan reached home after a short but brisk walk. He opened the door of his apartment and asked Alexa to turn on the Air Conditioning. The apartment was cooler than it was before within minutes. After meeting Joanna he felt light and humored. She had said she wanted to meet again on the weekend. Stanley looked forward to it.

Stanley did not ask Alexa a barrage of questions the way many people were so used to doing. Being AI-powered she lacked empathy and human-like creativity. He had spent a lot of money on this laptop, and the kind of glitches he was facing with Alexa were totally unfair.

Stanley made his dinner and decided he wanted to go to sleep. He had a long day ahead of him to attend the next day, with the course starting the day after. He knew that soon his schedule would be packed and he would probably not have enough time to go out with the beautiful woman he had met at the Diner. Maybe on those days, he would date Alexa instead, he thought to himself.

Sunday came around and Stanley Morgan was getting ready for his date. He did all of his research and put the extra hours at home into revising whatever had been taught so far. Stanley put on his best jeans and hoodie and spritzed on some Calvin Klein perfume. Stanley was a handsome man so that alone was good to go.

Stanley had a long talk with Joanne Tecki that day. They stared at each other for hours and kissed over the coffee. That was probably one of the best Sundays Stanley had ever had in his life. Back home where his parents mollycoddled him, he didn’t have to do anything. They had cars, expensive furniture, a huge house, and staff who helped them take care of it.

While he was thinking about all of these things, he reached home and opened the door of his apartment. Again he asked Alexa the other day, ‘Hi, Alexa please turn on the air-conditioning?’ Alexa did not respond.

Alexa replied after another 5 minutes “What did you say, Stanley?” Stanley was clearly losing faith in technology. But he had a renewed faith in humanity and the way things worked. Possibly this was the effect that Joanna was having on him.

Stanley continued to enjoy and attend his course. Since Joanna was free most of the time, they hung out a lot. The more time Stanley spent with Joanna the more realized the value of the human touch, the human spirit, and all of that. Joanna taught him that ‘there was more to Life’ and Stanley was a willing and ever-able student.

One day at class the teacher asked a question, and Stanley decided to volunteer an answer. He did not care that perhaps it would be the wrong answer.

‘How do you care for older people? And if there is an emergency what will you do first?’

Stanley answered the question to the best of his imagination. The text was not covered before, and it was just a warm-up question. “Very good,” said Jacinta Fernandez, the teacher who then added, “Stanley as we all know is the nicest young man, and has a human touch. That’s probably why he is the only one who could answer a difficult question like this without even reading the text”.

After class, Stanley went to meet Joanna Tecki, and they held hands and laughed together. The course was finally over within another 8 weeks. Stanley decided to extend his stay by a month so he could spend more time with Joanna. The first thing Stanley did when he got home was fix his laptop. He realized by now that nothing by far could replace a humane spirit and a human touch. And Alexa could never replace Joanna. Ever.
