A Higher Responsibility

Caring for yourself

Monday: Write about what it means to be a humble wayshower for humanity’s awakening.

Today has been a bit hard for me, my inner child was demanding I set a gentler, slower pace for the day. My emotions felt like they needed to spill out into reality and I felt called to hold space for myself on a deeper level.

So I listened and decided to go easy on myself.

This is still very new to me. The act of accommodating my own needs still at times seems self-indulgent, selfish, or vain. I still feel some inner resistance and guilt for caring for myself, but I know at this point in my life this is what I am being called to master more than ever.

Patience with myself, and life. Faith and trust that everything is okay and will be okay.

Sometimes I need to remind myself of all the things I’ve learned about caring for myself, and why It is one of the most important things I can do. As well as how it is one of the greatest contributions to humanity.

Being kind to ourselves is a rebellious act in a world full of praising the ruthless and grandiose. Unfortunately often our culture sees softness in any form as a weakness and caring for ourselves as selfish. But what I have personally experienced by changing the things I believe and the way I act is that… Caring for yourself is the most responsible thing you can do.

A message to my old self- The world is full of people that need caring for and nurturing and no matter how hard you try and convince yourself otherwise, that includes you.

This acknowledgment, silly as it may seem is one I return to. Because in the past my confidence was shaky and the external validation I sought made my head big at times. I was in denial for a long time.

Being humble often relies on us building and working on our confidence and self-worth, whilst acknowledging we are human, flawed, messy, and less than perfect in many ways. Being able to accept yourself in all your changing states is one of the hardest things to do in life, but humbling because you start to see humanity as all the same, you’re never above or below anyone.

Even if we are healers, carers, or supporters for others, we must always remember we need to care for ourselves first, before we extend ourselves to others. Caring for yourself keeps you humble because it is the deepest way you can connect to humanity. Through self-understanding and healing you learn about other people more deeply too.

When thinking about it like this I remind myself that by observing a need in myself and being able to meet it, I am doing a lot more than it seems.

I feel strongly now that If more people learned the skills to care for themselves and had role models that were good at doing this, we would all be better off for it.

Being a truth seeker, I believe, is now one of the greatest gifts we can contribute to humanity. This first has to start with us being honest with ourselves though, which is one of the greatest acts of self love.

The most inspiring people to me are the ones that follow their hearts and truth.

On my days where I feel off, or down, when I’m struggling to feel the light within me, I try and remember in these moments and times there is also a lot to be gained too. Sometimes feeling small, lost, or unimportant are good reminders to humble us. Good chances to reach for more faith or trust, and kindness for ourselves. Also, it’s a good opportunity to root our self-love just that extra bit deeper, by letting ourselves be human, messy, upset, or angry and by tending to ourselves in helpful and supportive ways.

Our darkness, overwhelming as it may be, always teaches us a lot. To create a level of acceptance for ourselves in all our less attractive, chaotic, moody states is incredibly difficult but powerfully transformative.

It also grows our compassion, which allows us to then extend this to others.

“A great man is always willing to be little.” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson

It is the little accomplishments that we must remember to celebrate and honour.

Just because they seem little doesn’t mean they are. Caring for yourself is stepping up to a higher position of responsibility, honouring yourself is appreciating the very essence of life.

Every small way we care for and show up for ourselves is a step towards healing not only ourselves but also humanity.
