A Heartfelt Nostalgic Journey into the World of Barbie
A Review of Barbie

The anticipation surrounding the announcement of a Warner Brothers’ Barbie movie stirred up a rush of childhood nostalgia. Mattel’s Barbie wasn’t just a toy; she was a cherished part of our family, sorting through memories of eclectic playtimes with a mishmash of dolls that included a perfect Barbie, some messed-up Barbies, a Skipper, and my brother’s Doc Holliday doll stand-in from an old Tombstone set. The buzz around the film’s casting — Margot Robbie as Barbie and my Studio City ex-neighbor, Ryan Gosling as Ken — seemed like a stroke of genius.

When the much-anticipated movie finally hit screens in July 2023, it became an instant sell-out, leaving me eagerly waiting for my chance to experience it. That moment arrived in December when I received an exclusive invitation to a special screening hosted by Variety, complete with a Q&A session with Mark Ronson, Andrew Wyatt, and George Drakoulias. Who took the audience through the journey of the sound design, musical scores, and songs of the Barbie movie.

Barbie, the movie, proved to be a heartwarming trip down memory lane. It beautifully encapsulated the essence of everything Barbie, stirring childhood desires for those extravagant furniture sets that were just out of reach. The attention to detail in the plastic toy sets and costumes was impeccable, staying true to the Barbie world. The storyline was a delight, and featuring stellar performances by America Ferrera, Will Ferrell, and Kate McKinnon added layers of humor and depth to the already impressive cast. The film’s ability to conjure nostalgic sentiments while delivering surprises made it a genuine treat for both long-time fans and newcomers alike. Once again, genius Director, Greta Gerwig delivers excellence.
