All the students loved Janice Wilson at Calvert Street Academy, which was a k-12 public school, located in Detroit, Michigan. What made this 25-year old so special was her willingness to listen. No matter what she was doing, it became secondary when it came to the needs of the students. Her primary objective was to learn from those she was out to teach, by allowing them to show her all she needed to know. She needed to learn about the children, and the only way this could be done was by allowing them to speak their minds. She concluded that to be a great teacher; she’d have to be a better student.
The majority of Miss. Wilson’s peers frowned upon her way of doing things, but they couldn’t deny the phenomenal results they produced. Because she was willing to put the needs of the students before her status, she earned their utmost respect. So, like she listened and heard them, they did likewise when it came to her.
Miss. Wilson’s students not only graduated but the majority of them did so with honors, and, furthered their education by attending college.
Teachers need to develop a student mentality if they expect to teach what they have learned effectively. As that old saying goes: ‘people don’t care about how much we know, until they know about how much we care.’
Below is a bonus piece from my book, The Gumbo: Food For Thought:
There’s a great divide,
so I’m always thinking of ways that will leave us all on one side,
the primary problem is foolish pride,
who’s smart enough to have us all arguing over who’s going to drive the ride,
When the only thing that should truly matter is arriving at the destination,
we’re all teachers, so why don’t we begin acting like it by respecting the power of education,
We should take turns,
voicing our concerns,
because this is the only way valuable lessons are learned,
Let love lead the way,
let living and light dictate the words that we say,
treat each second of every day,
like we know we’re not meant to stay,
But to leave something behind,
that will inspire mankind,
to always promote peace of mind.
Thank you for taking the time and donating it to reading my words. You could have chosen to spend it elsewhere but you didn’t and for that, I’m forever grateful. May your success continue to exceed your highest expectations.
