Summary

The poem "A Girl Named Honey" reflects on the idealized and unattainable qualities of a girl named Honey, ultimately revealing that she is an imaginary figure and encouraging the reader to embrace their true self.

Abstract

"A Girl Named Honey" is a poetic exploration of societal ideals embodied in the character Honey, who is depicted as universally adored and impeccable in every way. She is described as sweet, kind, talented, and intelligent, with a captivating presence that enchants everyone around her. • Honey is portrayed as a symbol of these unrealistic expectations, which can lead to a culture of comparison and the objectification of individuals as 'prizes'.
  • The poem suggests that the pursuit of being like Honey is futile and that true value lies in being oneself.
  • There is an underlying tone of satire in the portrayal of Honey, highlighting the absurdity of the societal pressure to conform to an ideal.
  • The author's request for newsletter subscriptions and Medium memberships through their link indicates a desire for both financial support and the emotional satisfaction of being read and appreciated by an audience.

POETRY

A Girl Named Honey.

Everyone loved her and loved being near her.

Beautiful Honey

Always so sweet

Honey only said kind words to those she would meet

Honey sang songs

slow and lovely

Her voice drew us out

until we danced in the street

Beautiful Honey

We used to laugh at her jokes

We fell at her feet

Beautiful Honey

So perfect and pure

We all wanted her

To show her off like a prize

Honey was so clever

Beautiful Honey

Our golden girl

She smelled like summer

After a rain

And we loved her stories

Beautiful Honey

She always did know

How to make us smile and to dance

The way that she healed us wasn’t by chance

Beautiful Honey

Our golden girl

Everyone loved her

Because she was fucking imaginary

Quit trying to be beautiful and perfect

Honey

Just be YOU
