A Fascinating Perspective on Medium
Medium has been touted as “The World’s Most Influential Publication Platform,”

Medium is a tool for writers to share their stories. It’s also a platform that can help you find all sorts of interesting information.
As a new user, Medium can seem an overwhelming place to start. With so many posts, comments, publications, and authors to explore — there’s no way I could ever read or contribute to everything! Fortunately for us all, some of the more prolific Mediumites are willing to share their time-tested knowledge with the rest of us.
Here are some of our favorite tips from these wise folks. Hopefully, they’ll give you a leg up on navigating your new surroundings;
- Don’t forget to follow other Medium users, or even publications, for a stream of interesting stories.
- The “Medium Topic Recommendations” can be really useful when exploring new topics — this is a great way to discover new voices and ways of approaching the same topics as you are interested in.
- Never be ashamed to ask questions. If you aren’t sure how to format something, don’t be afraid to ask your readers for help.
- Post frequently but not too frequently. I know this is a controversial topic, but it’s very important to keep your writing fresh for readers.
- Unless you are a celebrity with a huge following, do not use testimonials as the basis of your posts or publications. The “Ask Me Anything” style of publication — which lets anyone ask you anything — is the worst possible practice in the digital landscape. Do not take advantage of people who trust you enough to share their personal details online; they are vulnerable and are not worthy of such abuse.
- If you want to be on the bleeding edge of discussions, editing and republishing are great ways to add new posts if you’re not able to write a lot.
- Understanding how Medium’s algorithm works will help you in ranking posts, finding authors, and also getting more reads.
Prioritization Is A Key To Success!
If you’re an author, do not expect to make money on Medium straight away. Focus on what you love rather than the money and you’ll be much happier.
One of the best ways to build an audience is to keep posting consistently every week. If you write something that’s really good, you’re likely to get a lot of reads because people trust the source. This way, your audience grows and if your content is high quality, it’ll stay that way.
If you see a post that has been read a lot, it’s probably because of one of two reasons: either the content is really high quality or the author is really influential. This is something to think about as you create and share on Medium!
There are some great Medium publications for finding interesting new writers.
There are plenty of opportunities to monetize on Medium. The trick is that you need to be creative about it! Some things you can do include;
- You can see other people’s recommended writers and follow them.
- Find authors who are popular in the topics you write about and see what they’re doing.
- If your writing is well received you can build relationships by replying to comments and showing appreciation to the people who read your articles.
- Use Medium as a kind of resume to showcase your portfolio and excellent written work.
- When it comes to making money on Medium, if you have a lot of followers or if you have something that’s already very successful, then it’s better to go with a membership model and build an email list.
- If you’re set on a certain post getting a lot of attention and followers, share it on Twitter at the right time.
Saying thank you is incredibly important as an author. A reader should know that if they spend their time on your work, you’re going to be happy to do the same for them. This improves Medium’s community as a whole!
