A Farmer’s Creative Sabbatical (1)
San Rafael Norte, Costa Rica

Having traveled here for many years, Costa Rica has become my second home. I’m especially fond of the valley in the southern zone, in the hills surrounding San Isidro de El General.
It’s not an easy journey from Washington state. I’ll write about that adventure later. I’m still a tad traumatized! But right now I can hear a toucan calling, and I know all will be well.
The first two days here were full of rain, and I’m talking pigs and chickens, not cats and dogs. It really knows how to rain here, and I’m thankful for every drop, considering the drought I left behind in the States. Agua de Dios.

Today my host drove my artist friend Jan Hart and me to the feria, an open-air farmers’ market that’s the best I’ve seen anywhere in the world. It stretches across maybe two city blocks. It’s easy to spend most of the day here, which I’ve done in the past!

Notice the prices—4 whatever-these-are for 500 colones, about 80¢ USD.
Aside from eating well and healthfully, I have a few goals to accomplish here:
- Walk at least two miles every day,
- Paint something in watercolor every day,
- Write something every day,
- Decompress and hit my reset button after all the political carnage over the past handful of years, and then decide if I want to go back to a broken country,
- And finally, try not to drink too many margaritas. This last one is optional.
Stay tuned!
I’ll be here for the whole month, adventuring and loving and writing about la pura vida.
Thanks for reading! And thanks to WotWU and ScienceDuuude for hosting my wandering words. 😎
