A Far Less Harmful Source Of Power
We Must Prioritize The Most Environmentally-Friendly Option
The government needs to accelerate the construction of public buses powered by hydrogen gas so that it can faster replace the existing public buses that are powered by fossil fuels (diesel).
Prioritize Public Transportation That’s Powered By Green Energy
To be sure, the building and expansion of the public bus system in general is something Malaysia truly needs in order to help solve its traffic and pollution problems, especially in the major cities.
However, the governments at both federal and state levels must take this a step further by making sure that more hydrogen-powered public buses are built and used on the road.
In addition to strengthening the public bus transport system, this measure will not only reduce the use of fossil fuels and electric vehicle batteries for the powering of public buses but in doing so will reduce the level of pollution.

The Problem With Diesel- And Electric-Powered Vehicles
The burning of fossil fuels releases greenhouse gases, while the manufacture of electric vehicle batteries requires extensive mining for certain minerals.
This extensive mining will have serious, adverse impacts on the environment, including ecosystem destruction, groundwater pollution, threats to the health of mine workers, etc.
Hence, this reveals that utilizing fossil fuels and electric battery vehicles as a form of fuel for public buses isn’t at all sustainable when it comes to protecting the environment and reducing global warming.
It is very disappointing that in Malaysia, which has high aspirations and aims to be a developed country, almost all public buses are powered by diesel fuel, and they emit a lot of harmful black smoke.
This in turn adversely impacts the health of road users.
Remove Harmful, Polluting Buses From Our Roads
In terms of addressing this problem specifically, the government needs to identify as well as recall all those public buses that emit a lot of black smoke and replace them with more environmentally friendly buses, or at least install quality filters in the exhaust of those buses.

In conclusion, the government needs to accelerate the construction of public buses powered by hydrogen gas so that it can faster replace the existing public buses that are powered by fossil fuels.
It’s good that the government plans to improve the public transport system in Malaysia.
However, a more holistic, long-term approach is required when implementing such systemic changes in order to minimize any potential negative effects.
