Summary

Roxy, who had been successfully managing her mental health through meditation and positive thinking, experiences a sudden return of panic attacks, which culminates in a life-threatening event that seemingly resolves her condition.

Abstract

Roxy had significantly improved her mental well-being through consistent meditation, affirmations, and maintaining a positive outlook. Despite her progress, she was unexpectedly struck by a series of panic attacks that disrupted her sleep and daily life. These attacks felt different from her past fears, leading her to ponder whether they were a resurgence of previously suppressed emotions. The situation reached a critical point when Roxy narrowly escaped a car veering onto the sidewalk where she was walking. Following this harrowing incident, the panic attacks ceased, leaving her to contemplate the nature of her fear and its sudden disappearance.

Opinions

  • The author suggests that Roxy's proactive approach to mental health, including meditation and positive affirmations, can significantly improve one's emotional state.
  • There is an implication that fear can manifest in different forms and intensities, and that past fears may resurface even after a period of improvement.
  • The narrative conveys a sense of mystery regarding the origin and resolution of Roxy's panic attacks, hinting at a possible connection between her internal state and external events.
  • The story may reflect the idea that life-altering events can lead to sudden changes in one's mental health, either positively or negatively.
  • The author leaves the reader with a sense of ambiguity about whether Roxy has truly overcome her fear or if it will return in another form.

A Different Kind of Fear

Feeling something imminent

Just when she thought her life situation was getting better shit started hitting the fan again. Roxy had been meditating twice a day, she was saying her affirmations and she was consciously trying to maintain only positive thoughts. What went wrong?

And her life had become more joyous as well. Times of depression were gone. She was in a happy mood most of the time and when she found herself slipping into sadness she was acutely aware of it and immediately changed her thinking. She repeatedly voiced her appreciation of things and people in her life and she started truly feeling that appreciation on a regular basis.

Roxy used to live in a state of near constant fear. But that had faded away…

…until now.

The panic attacks came back. She started waking up in the middle of the night again filled with incredible fear of horrible things that were surely about to happen to her. But after managing to get back to sleep she slept peacefully and in the morning she awoke happy and optimistic. The memory of the panic attack was there but it had little affect on her morning.

And then later in the day she would be walking down the street and after turning a corner another panic attack would seize her. She would stop and breathe deeply trying to relax and center herself. The fear would leave quickly and she would feel harmonious again. It was as though she had finally stepped out of her fear for the first time in her life but the fear kept following her and now was occasionally taking hold of her.

Roxy wondered if it was all the fear she had released trying to get back inside her. She wondered if it was leftover fear from her past that she still had not fully released. The fear somehow felt different than the fear that used to consume her on a regular basis. There was a different quality to it and this puzzled her.

Then, about a week after the panic attacks started again, she was walking down the street towards the parking lot where her car was parked. She was walking against traffic. Suddenly, a car heading toward her left the road and jumped up onto the sidewalk where Roxy was walking. It was headed straight for her.

With no time to think she dove away from the street landing in a flower bed just as the car passed on the sidewalk right where she had been walking. Getting up off the ground Roxy looked back to see that the car had managed to swerve back onto the street.

Her heart was pounding. Slowly, she got up and brushed dirt and pieces of flowers off her clothes. She had a small scrape on her left hand but she was unhurt. And alive. Once she had gathered herself she resumed her walk to her car.

After that the new panic attacks went away.
