A Designer’s Life
The truth on the real differences between the have’s and have-nots.
I was speaking with a young man the other evening over the phone. I’d reached out to see how he was doing when it turned out, I had called during a particularly tough day for him. Little did I realize that my sincere opening “How are you?” would open a disgruntled dialogue of discontent that even this life coach found difficult to navigate. Yet, I listened — as all good coaches do — for the nuances of insight that would allow me to steer the course of the conversation toward a direction that would be helpful and to provide a level of insight he could use.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get through to the young man during that particular time. And that’s OK. Sometimes we need to process things overtime to get past them and arrive at a point where we can see with greater clarity.
As I thought later about this young man and the content of our conversation, it occurred to me he — like each and every one of us — leads a Designer’s Life. Now, when the term “designer” is mentioned, most of us tend to think in terms of something rare, refined, and highly desired. Well, I can tell you for a fact that the state of his life — according to him — is about as far from desirable as it can be. And yet, it is as rare and refined as he has designed it to be.
You Live a Designer’s Life
How you define your life is the way it’ll play out. You are the designer. You get to choose what to embrace and what to reject. You decide on a version of happiness that meets or exceeds your expectations, and you get to decide whether that happiness is worth the effort it’ll take to achieve it.
The course, quality, and content of life is a choice each of us makes. No one can escape this Universal law. And, no matter the circumstances, life will respond to the demands of the Designer.
3 Phases
A determined designer is aware of the importance of each phase of the design process…
Concept Phase
The conceptualization of the construct and quality of life is the fundamental phase of the design process. It is here where the designer can choose between the use of the full capacity of imagination or simply “fit in” with the generic choices life has to offer. Sadly, most people take the easy way out and choose the generic path despite that still, small voice questioning and wondering if they too have what it takes to achieve their best life.
Implementation Phase
The implementation phase should never be delayed. Here’s where most people take a great concept and fall away from living their best life because of inaction. Action is the catalyst that brings about change. Action is the only thing that’ll lead you to the doorstep of your best life. Leave out this critical step in the design process and all you’re left with are the dreams of a well-intentioned designer.
Adjustment Phase
With a clear concept and the experience of the action on your side, you’re ready to make any adjustments required to refine or enhance your life’s path. If you’re satisfied with the course, quality, and content of your life, then simply keep doing what it is you’re doing. If not, make some adjustments and re-implement.
Are you ready to take responsibility for the design of your life? If so, adopt the mindset of a determined designer. Take a good look at the course, quality, and content of your life, and then get busy on a design you rightfully deserve.
Live Your Best Life!
