Summary

The Joe Biden campaign has launched an official TikTok account to engage with voters ahead of the 2024 Presidential Election, despite the U.S. government's concerns and bans on the app.

Abstract

The Biden campaign's presence on TikTok marks a strategic move to connect with the platform's vast audience, particularly younger voters. With over 1 billion users worldwide and 150 million accounts in the U.S., TikTok has become a significant source of news and influence. The campaign's decision to join the platform comes amidst ongoing scrutiny and restrictions placed on TikTok by the U.S. government, including a ban on government-issued devices. Despite these controversies, the Biden campaign's TikTok account has quickly gained a substantial following, reflecting the platform's potential as a political tool.

Opinions

  • The Biden campaign's use of TikTok indicates a recognition of the platform's power in shaping public opinion and reaching a demographic that is highly engaged with political content.
  • There is a perceived irony or contradiction in the Biden administration's stance on TikTok, as it both bans the app on government devices due to security concerns and actively uses it for campaign purposes.
  • The move to join TikTok may be seen as a pragmatic approach to modern campaigning, leveraging the app's vast reach and influence, especially among younger demographics.
  • Some may question the timing of the campaign's entry onto TikTok and whether it is appropriate for a sitting president to use a platform that has raised national security concerns.
  • The rapid accumulation of followers on the Biden campaign's TikTok account suggests that there is a significant interest in political content on the platform, despite ongoing debates about its use by government officials.

For the next nine months, your For You Page is going to be inundated with videos collected with the 2024 Presidential Election. As reported by CNBC, the Joe Biden campaign has officially launched an account on TikTok with the intent of meeting voters where they spend a huge part of their time these days.

What is strange is Biden’s camp has a love or a hate relationship with TikTok. It has banned the app on government issued devices and TikTok’s CEO has been summoned to testify in multiple hearings in front of elected officials.

Now, the move is not at all surprising. TikTok currently has over 1 billion users on the app and in the U.S. there are 150 million accounts. In addition, TikTok is an influential source of news for users and quite surprising considering the app is still not transparent with how it promotes/demotes content with its secretive algorithms.

Below you will find Biden’s first TikTok where he discussed the Super Bowl.

At the time of writing this post, Biden’s campaign has already amassed 108K followers so far.

Do you think it was too late to start an account on TikTok? Is it appropriate for a president running for re-election to choose a controversial platform? Please let me know in the comments what you think.
