A Day To Remember

A day of magic and disbelief

I wake early, excitement flowing through the air, sprinkled within the bright sunbeams, I feel I’ve been waiting patiently for this very day, or so it seems, Why? I hear you ask, Well let me give you the lowdown, metaphorically speaking, I’ll quickly unmask, Today, oh what a glorious day it’ll be, Because today is the annual Space Market — although sadly it’s no longer free.

Let me tell you; there’ll be ‘come one, come all’, As the guests venture far and wide — galaxy upon galaxy — they’ll all heed the call, And what can you purchase? You query curiously and genuinely in awe, Well, let’s see. There’ll be anything you can think of, within the letter of the law, Food and drink you’ve never conceived existed; advanced technological miracles and terminal sickness cures, Almost anything you can imagine, from self-grown vegetables to Valentine lures.

I dress in a hurry and forgo breaking my fast for this day, In too much of a hurry to be on my way, I’m expecting a surprise; one whereby I will see a friend from a far off solarium planet and we are destined to meet, A tall male specimen with the pinkest of hair and the greenest of feet, We’ll chill over an interplanetary cocktail and a mutual recipe on the grill, While we catch up on the latest news, until we’re sated with our fill.

I’m keen to wander the aisles looking for an unusual gift, One that’ll put to bed a lifetime scarring rift, Between myself and my brother of an undetermined age, A rift of so many years that we no longer understand the reason behind our rage, I’m hoping to find something so special we’ll put this animosity to bed, And pick up where we once left off, a loving relationship instead.

Maybe I’ll find a cauldron of silky rabbit tails, Or possibly a jar of ancient alien toenails, Both hold the power of magic if treated especially right, Resulting in the perfect gift to end our lifelong fight, Oh, to see my brother’s smile directed once more at me, Will gladden my broken heart and set us both free.

Once we’ve put aside our differences, we can dance the night under the double red moons, Eating swatches of fireflies and drinking brewed lights mined from the stars, as the musical band croons, We’ll dance in sandals purchased from the roaring twenties stall, Footwear made of a black stallion’s whiskers and a peacock’s call, Infused with an angry ginger concoction, made to tickle the wearer’s feet, So that every dance step spews forth the aroma of happiness complete.

Can you see why I woke this morning in giddy delight? This day is going to be glorious and the Space Market will be a sight, Individuality abound and colours galore, Our senses will be overwhelmed in every imaginable way we’ll adore, This will be a day of perfect memories, of dreams that seldom come true, But one of intergalactic peace well and truly overdue.

This poem was written in response to a prompt from Lodestar Gazette. The prompt I chose to run with is as follows :

It is in a sprawling space market where anything from across the galaxy can be bought and sold. You can create stories or poems about bizarre items, alien cultures, and intriguing characters that populate this market.
