A Day to Celebrate

It’s National Arbor Day and...

I’m sure many of you know that today is National Arbor Day here in the US and perhaps elsewhere. But did you know that Bugs Bunny also has laid claim to this day? Yep, it’s National Bugs Bunny Day! “Eh, {chomp, chomp, chomp}, what’s up, Doc?”

I haven’t seen any sign of that wascal wabbit, but I know one thing: if Elmer Fudd catches him in his garden, the chase will be on. Of course, Bugs will outsmart Elmer Fudd and will be back in his garden munching carrots while Elmer Fudd is looking all over for him.

As a kid, I remember having a box of comic books under my bed. Didn’t all kids? I had most of them memorized, but still, I’d sit for hours going through them. Bugs and Elmer Fudd appeared in many of them. Today, I suppose, kids have a box full of DVDs of their favorite cartoons.

Today’s also national Oatmeal Cookie Day and National Raisin Day. Perfect for me as I love oatmeal-raisin cookies. So, I’m glad we celebrate raisins and oatmeal cookies on the same day. It’s more efficient that way. Before today, I’d never heard of either of these days. I wonder if my friend who’s a retired raisin farmer knows about it. I’ll have to ask him.

And for you cat lovers, it is National Hairball Awareness Day. Why we need to have a hairball awareness day is beyond me, but then I’m not overly fond of cats. Why, you may ask? Well, when I was a kid, I picked up my grandmother’s cat and was hugging it near my face when it reached out a paw and scratched my eye. I had a bloodshot eye for several days. My mother and the doctor were quite concerned, but thankfully, no serious damage was done. After that, I’ve stayed away from cats. Learning our son has cat allergies solidified our no-cats rule.

And if Arbor Day and Bugs Bunny Day and all that aren’t enough, today is also National Honesty Day? So shouldn’t we have a National Dishonesty Day, too? Seems only fair. I mean, really, do we need to celebrate honesty? Shouldn’t that be a given? I know, with all the dishonesty that’s been ricocheting about in some political circles the last few years, maybe we need to celebrate honesty.

It is also National Bubble Tea Day. I have to confess that I don’t know what bubble tea is. I’ve seen shops selling it, but I’ve never had one. My daughter has; she said she loved it. It’s on my list of things to try. Since my daughter and I have similar tastes, if she likes it, I probably will, too.

And finally, I can’t end without mentioning that today is also National Military Brats Day. I have a few friends who have the distinction of being military brats. My kids came close to having that honor, I had eight years in when I said goodbye to the military. The kids were still quite young. They only experienced a couple of PCS (permanent change of station) moves and were too young to understand what was going on. My wife and I wanted to keep it that way, so we left the military and settled down.

I know this will probably post too late for many of you to celebrate, but keep it in mind for next year. Oh, Arbor day is the last Friday in April, so it won’t be April 30 next year.
