A Day in the Life of Adventurers

Which Readers Thought You Need to Adventure Early?

Laura and Sasha at Mount Bonnell outside of Austin TX. All pictures by Laura Jevtich taken February 25–29, 2024.

Not Us! We are the Founders of the Crack Of Noon Club!

Maybe we plan activities in the afternoons knowing we live for the warmth. Some days the better events or museums open at 11 am. Or to check-out of a hotel or campground is 11 am or noon.

All I know is Sasha (my husband) and I seem to gravitate towards adventures that happen in the afternoon.

The Day Begins

We start off at 11:20 am today to go to a meadery, winery, cidery, and a brewery. It is a windy day. Not a good day for driving on the highway, but excellent for driving on back roads.

Just saw a white goat outside of its fence, happily munching on green grass. We went by too fast for a photo.

We have to deal with locals who speed on the back roads while we want to take it slow.

Many houses in this area and Austin are yellow from the rocks here. A golden yellow or daisy yellow from the limestone. There are hills in Texas, sweeping vistas, piñon and juniper trees, meadows, and southern live oaks.

Huge plots of land owned by ranchers and farmers. Fences of four to eight feet tall to keep out deer and others.

We start getting into strange names for towns, as German and Dutch populations came here in the 1800s.

Turkey vultures eating a hare or deer on the side of the road. I thought they were ravens but then I saw their heads.

We went to a fabulous meadery and winery all in the same place. Blue Lotus Winery and Texas Mead Works, Omgosh. I enjoyed the mead. Sasha did too. I am not sure if it was the personable pour person or we were enjoying the mead but I had six tastes of mead and four wines from white to very dry reds. I went back to their most popular mead, a blackberry carbonated mead.

My favorite mead, which tasted like a cream soda, we bought.

The Container Community

They use containers you see on 18-wheelers and put them on foundations. Heated and cooled with mini-splits, with plumbing and electric, they are a cute way to vacation in Hill Country.

Inside one container ^^^

Crazed Cidery Cyser

From there we went to a snobby cidery which calls themselves a cyser cider. They blend apples with honey to create an effervescent drink. Didn’t matter that there was hardly anyone in there. There was no seating by the cider pour area, and for a tasting of five ciders it cost $25 plus tax. Crazed.

(I decided to only try 4, so they “gave” me a bigger pour for the last tasting).

The Brewery with 3Ts

Altstadt Brewery has hops from Germany and water from Texas. Somehow it works. The brewery also has a museum outside where you can buy beer too.

We managed, without knowing, to get there at happy hour. They have special pricing on Wednesday and Thursday from 3 — 6 pm. Hubby got a lager and a Pilsner for half off, and we got two appetizers at reduced prices.

I got a white peach wine sangria that was perfectly matched with a fruity red strawberries and blue cheese salad. Matched too with chicken wings with a honey mustard sauce was perfect.

We stayed there until almost closing time. Then we found a place to park our van, text and talk to friends and family, and enjoy the night in our insulated van with triple covered bed. Tonight’s outdoor temperature: 44 degrees F. Time to get warm.

I am not a procrastinator. I like productivity and tend to do my best work in the mornings. Typically, we are on Pacific Time Zone and my east coast friends are up way before us.

We need to head south. Catch you on the other side of internet land.
