Summary

A garden boasts a record-breaking daffodil, sparking a playful comparison to the sci-fi novel "The Day of the Triffids."

Abstract

A garden has produced an unusually tall daffodil, measuring 112 cms (approximately 44 inches), which may be the tallest ever recorded. This daffodil's height surpasses the typical range of 5 to 45 cms mentioned by Gardener's World. The article suggests that this remarkable specimen could be a descendant of a commercial crop of daffodils grown on a nearby farm 15 years prior. These daffodils have since spread throughout the neighborhood, appearing along field edges and roadsides. The author humorously likens the proliferation of these daffodils to the fictional, menacing plants in "The Day of the Triffids," warning of a potential "Day of the Daffodils." The piece concludes by recommending works by various storytellers as a form of escape from the impending daffodil takeover.

Opinions

  • The author finds the daffodil's height remarkable, considering it potentially record-breaking.
  • There is a hint of pride in the daffodil being a product of their own garden.
  • The daffodil's brief lifespan, collapsing after just a day, is met with a sense of wonder and amusement.
  • The author playfully suggests that the spread of daffodils in the neighborhood could be the beginning of a daffodil domination akin to a science fiction scenario.
  • The article concludes with a tongue-in-cheek warning about "killer daffodils," indicating a light-hearted and creative approach to garden observations.
  • The recommendation of various authors for reading material implies that the author values storytelling and literature as a source of comfort and joy.

A Daffodil With Attitude — Breaking Records?

The tallest daffodil in the world?

It’s probably not — the tallest daffodil in the world, I mean — but it’s the tallest that’s ever appeared in our garden. We measured it at 112 cms (just over 44 inches).

According to Gardener’s World, “Daffodils range in height from about 5cm up to 45cm,” so maybe it was the tallest daffodil in the world after all. It lasted just a day, then collapsed.

It grew in a spot where we’ve never planted daffodils, but about 15 years ago, a farm a few miles away grew a commercial crop of daffodils. Although it was just for one year and they then went back to the more conventional oilseed rape and wheat, those commercial daffodils have been spreading around the neighbourhood ever since. They appear along field headlands and roadsides, bright ribbons of yellow, snaking further every year.

We’ve decided that our daffodil was a descendant of those escaped commercial plants. This one didn’t last long, but who knows what future years will bring.

Have you read The Day of the Triffids? Next time a flash of yellow catches your eye, be afraid. This is the eve of The Day of the Daffodils!
