A Cure For Blindness
And skinny cooks
2021 has been a good year with many positive advances. With the continuing spread of Covid, political uncertainty, global warming, and increasing international tension, it seems as if nothing good has come out of this year.
The truth is that there have been some major advances and remarkable discoveries that have been largely ignored. This story is about one of them.
A successful study this year has put us on track for curing blindness. Berna Gomez has been fully blind for 16 years. Today she can identify lines, shapes and simple letters. The technique will soon allow people to identify doorways, cars, and people. We are a long way from giving somebody sufficient vision to pick up a book and read it. However one day in the not too distant future it will be reality.
A neurosurgeon implanted a microelectrode array into Berna Gómez’s visual cortex. She wore eyeglasses equipped with a miniature video camera; specialized software encoded the visual data collected by the camera and sent it to the array which then stimulated neurons to produce phosphenes, perceived by Gómez as white points of light. aranged into images. She was able to identify lines, shapes, and simple letters evoked by different patterns of stimulation.
