Why Is A Cruise A Great Place to Learn A New Culture?

The adventure was finally here, I had waited my whole life to take this trip but I had been nervous at the same time. I always wondered how a ship in the middle of the ocean could keep me busy for days. Would I be bored? Would I be ready to get back on land in a day? All my friends who had taken cruises before guaranteed me that I could never get bored, but I was not so sure.

As I stepped onto the ship, I quickly learned that everyone I had talked to about cruises was right. The ship was nothing less than a floating city. It had everything from pools, water slides, restaurants, stores, theaters, spas, activities, and so much more. The one thing I learned from the cruise that no one talked about was all the different cultures.

I found this fascinating. The only culture I have been around is the United States culture before the cruise. I always wanted to learn about other cultures and visit other countries but haven’t had the opportunity. The first night at dinner our main waitress was from Jamaica. She was very friendly and taught us how silly some things we say sound in other cultures.

“Can I try the Shrimp,” I said to her.

“Oh you just want to try, so you just want me to bring you one shrimp.” She said jokingly.

This was very eye-opening. We were joking around but it made me realize how confusing our world could be to different cultures. She was fantastic. Her personality was so fun and bubbly. This was just one of many things she taught us about our culture compared to other cultures.

Her partner on the other hand was completely different. He was very serious. He reminded me of a guard standing over Buckingham palace. He always stood tall with a straight face. He never really said much. The best part of the whole dinner was after he cleared our table before dessert he pulled out a razer shape tool and scraped any bread crumbs off the table.

“I am so sorry I am a little messy,” I said with a smile as I laughed. I have never seen anyone do this before. He didn’t say anything, he did his job and returned to his post. I found it fascinating that over two hours I learned so much about two different cultures.

This type of experience went on throughout the whole trip. All the employees seemed excited to talk about their homes, where they came from, and how their country did things.

Going on a cruise ship can be a great time with your loved ones but it can also be a wonderful educational time to learn about different countries. Because of this cruise, I now have Jamaica on my life list.
