A Coward With a Gun is a Death Waiting

“I think about that night when I read stories of children being shot when chasing a ball into someone’s yard or when they accidently go to the wrong house. Why do people think shooting is the first thing to do when in reality it should be the last choice?”

When I was 18 years old (1974) a friend and I were traveling south towards Greensboro, NC on US 220 late one night when his car started overheating badly. After going as far as he dared drive the car we pulled to the side of the highway in front of a house that had the lights on, and turned on the 4 way flashers. As we started walking towards the front door hoping to use the phone to call a tow truck, a man came out of the house and started shooting at us with a shotgun. No warning, just shooting. As neither of us were armed we ran towards the car, jumped in, and sped away… His engine was soon toast as all the coolant had boiled out.

Had we been armed we would most likely returned fire, and when we were 18 and keen eyed, we rarely missed.

I think about that night when I read stories of children being shot when chasing a ball into someone’s yard or when they accidently go to the wrong house. Why do people think shooting is the first thing to do when in reality it should be the last choice?

My own story shows this isn’t new, but it appears to be more common.

In North Carolina and most states it is legal for a licensed hunter to chace his run-away hunting dog across private property even if that property is clearly marked no trespassing. If the property owner shoots the dog or the hunter the property owner goes to jail. In many states trespassing is legal if the trespasser is chasing run-away livestock. The livestock has legal protection as well. Kill a neighbor’s cow for eating your flowers and you go to jail. Long time residents of rural areas know these things, but many of those same people are quite likely to shoot someone simply for being lost. And the new rural often have no clue. These shooters can only be described as cowards. Why are they so damned scared?

They’re scared because they are irrational cowards. They spend their time listening to and believing propaganda about rising crime rates when in fact violent crime rates have fallen by 49% since 1993. America is safer than ever before. The actions of these shooters are exactly what every gun safety class tells us not to do.

I’m not going to say that anyone should take away our guns (yes, I own guns) but quite likely, if you own a gun because you are scared you probably have no business owning a gun. The person most likely to get shot with your gun will be you or someone else who is innocent. And for what, because someone is stepping on your grass?

Those of you who defend or make excuses for these shooters are only increasing the likelihood that our guns will be taken away. And yes, there are many who excuse these shooters just as they do mass murderers. You’re only making things worse for both sides with your claims of false flags and denials that the events ever took place. Your fear mongering helps no one and exposes your own cowardice. You will be the one to blame when we no longer have gun rights.
