Melbourne and Taranto

Chatting with the editors’ group, as well as other writers, I find that I find (?) the best ideas for posts. Naturally, when an idea is born cooperatively, it should be made to thrive together as well.

As with social media in general, blogging here on Medium has helped me connect not only with people from around the world but from many different walks of life. Just in the Counter Arts team, we have 2 Americans, 3 Australians, 1 Colombian, 1 Singaporean, and 1 Italian. And…surprise? We are only 5. This brings me to my next point.

Though on paper you would consider me 100% ethnically Italian, I consider myself Italo-Australian. My mother, in fact, was born and raised here, in the beautiful (though problematic at times) Melbourne. My father instead was a village boy, from a town named Pulsano, in the province of the strange city of Taranto.

While most of Italy is renowned for history and monuments, Taranto is renowned for three things (but we got history too):

  • the beach
  • pollution
  • good mussels

I know, strange place. In fact, not a very known place either. Travelling a bit outside of Italy people would often ask me where, from Italy, I was precisely from. Now, I knew that expecting people to know about Pulsano was a bit of a stretch, so I would answer Taranto.

Do you mean Toronto?

No, Taranto. You know, where Quentin Tarantino’s family likely got their surname from…an actual place. Honestly, I am usually not that petty. It must have been since the war with Pyrrhus against Rome that Taranto has had a decline in fame. But, maybe one day I’ll talk a bit more about the historic figures and events that have lived through the Mediterranean city…

Melbourne? Well, I’ve been here for a while now, and can finally say that I found where I feel at home. Don’t misunderstand me please, as soon as travelling will be possible again, I plan on being everywhere possible for as long as possible. But, Melbourne is where I’ll always want to return too.
