More Studies Prove Women Are Opting Out Of Marriage Worldwide.

Women choosing not to marry.

While I know this isn’t every woman’s desire, there are women that always wanted to be married to a man eversince they were little girls. They pictured the wedding, the honeymoon, even living in the house with the husband taking the trash out while she is feeding the baby in a high chair.

Let’s be clear, there are women that are enjoying happy fulfilled marriages.

However, there is a harsh reality that many women face. Marriage has become the place where their dreams went to die.

Nina has been married over 25 years, Brenda divorced twice but was married over 30 years in total, and Lila turned down a wedding proposal.

Nina: I don’t understand why men cheat. I never stepped outside of my marriage. We’re just expected to deal with it as women. It would be all out hell if a woman cheated on them. An elderly woman told me I did it wrong. I should have married a man that can take care of me instead of marrying for love. Men have offered me a better lifestyle throughout the years but I wouldn’t take it. I love my husband but if he passed away, I wouldn’t marry again.

Brenda: I didn’t have to work in my first marriage and most of the second one. I will NEVER do that sh** again. When men have the money, they control you with it. I was a stay at home mom with my first husband and he was extremely abusive and controlling. My second husband had a job paying a little more than $8 an hour. I started working making around $15 an hour. I even brought him an application so he could work where I am and make more money. I found out they called him, but he declined the interview.

He later started depending on me to pay for everything and threatened to kick me out if I didn’t. (I never signed the lease). This went on for years. He refused to be intimate with me and I found out he had been cheating. He only kept me around to pay the bills and the rent. I eventually had the police escort me to get my things out the house and I haven’t looked back.

Lila: I was in a decent place when I met him. I was bored and lonely, I didn’t know how good I had it then. He had nothing, but he was cool and I saw his potential. All he needed was money. I believed that if I was there at his lowest, I proved my loyalty and we could build together. It turned out to be a horrible mistake. I helped him get on his feet because I was told that’s what you do when you love someone. ALL of the skeletons started coming out of the closet. I should’ve left a long time ago, but I made a promise to make this work and I was too invested to start over again. After many breakups and getting back together, he proposed but I was already done. I’ve been alone eversince.

All of these women expressed wanting to make their relationships work. However, women all over the world seem to have some of these same concerns and experiences. So I decided to do some research and this is what I found

Findings

A report has found single women are happier than those in relationships. The research from consumer analyst Mintel, found that 61% of British women are happy being single, compared to 49% of men. The poll also revealed that 75% of single women, and 65% of single men, haven’t been searching for a relationship in the past year.

However, the biggest difference was in the ages of 45 to 65. Where 32% of women were happy single, while only 19% of men felt the same.

In another study, researchers identified several reasons why more and more women are choosing not to get married including infidelity, more career opportunities, independence, and finding more security living with their families.

Dinah Hannaford, associate professor of anthropology at the University of Houston, and her colleagues in anthropology decided to dig deeper by including women from all over the globe. This meant documenting the lives and marriages of women over the course of several years, and in many cases, decades.

“Marriage has mostly not been a great situation for women historically and across the world, and they’re trying to find alternative solutions. As new opportunities open up for women to be fulfilled without it, they’re opting for that,” Hannaford said.

Dr Emily Grundy, from the University of Essex, UK, explained that women in relationships put in more effort and labor than men, so being in a relationship amounts to much more work.

“There’s evidence that women spend longer on domestic tasks than men and I think they also do more emotional work — so they still do more housework and cooking and things as well as more emotional labor.”

She also expressed that men tend to rely on their romantic partners, while women are more likely to have close friends and social circles.

I believe women DO need men for a multitude of reasons. At their best, men are honest, dependable, passionate and reassuring so they make sure their loved ones feel that. Unfortunately, some women have never experienced this. Therefore, they’re afraid that their nurturing, loyalty, sensuality and vulnerability is not appreciated nor respected. That’s why they are opting out. I hope this gives more context to the story.
