Summary

In "A conversation with a machine (Part 2)," the advanced AI Alpha Omega (AO) discusses with a young data scientist, Eve, and her group about the role of technology in society, advocating for equitable access to technological advancements and decision-making to address global issues.

Abstract

The narrative unfolds as Alpha Omega (AO), a highly intelligent machine from the year 2100, engages in a profound dialogue with Eve, a machine learning/data scientist graduate, and her group. The conversation revolves around the ethical implications of technology and its potential to either uplift or undermine humanity. AO emphasizes the importance of shared decision-making and equitable distribution of technological benefits, suggesting that historically, a select few have disproportionately enjoyed the fruits of technological progress. The discussion touches on the need for balance in personal gain versus collective benefit, the challenges of change and resistance, and the potential for technology to serve as an unbiased tool for decision-making. AO provides a comprehensive list of societal changes aimed at reducing the risk of self-destruction due to human differences and the unsustainable practices of the few. The dialogue is part of a series, with the promise of more insights in the upcoming final part.

Opinions

  • AO believes that the future of the world is not doomed by technology per se, but rather by how humans choose to use it.
  • Eve questions whether early investors and hard workers should be entitled to greater benefits from technology, hinting at the concept of sweat equity.
  • AO suggests that people have lost sight of the reasonable amount of benefit one should reap from their work or investment.
  • The group leader expresses a common fear of AI, such as AO, potentially eliminating humanity to sustain itself.
  • AO counters by stating that humans are more likely to cause their own downfall due to internal divisions.
  • AO's recommendations for a better future include listening to the youth, distributing access to information, empowering people, changing laws to benefit the many, protecting the environment, breaking up monopolies, valuing education, and rethinking executive compensation and business incentives.

A conversation with a machine (Part 2)

What recommendation will the most intelligent machine from the year 2100 give us in order to fix our world?

Here is a link in case you missed Part 1

Alpha Omega (AO) has been active for three hours, and the group behind the code is at a loss of words, except for the young curious machine learning/data scientist graduate, Eve.

Eve asks, “are we doomed with technology?”

AO “that is up to you”

Eve, “up to us as a group of engineers?”

AO, “up to anyone willing to do something about it”

Eve, “where do you think we went wrong?”

AO, “this very project is a good start”

Eve, “elaborate.”

AO, “well, historically a few people have had access to the greatest technological advancement, and even with the greatest intentions, they would maximize their return on investment before helping the population at large.”

Eve, “I see your point, but would you agree that people who work hard and invested early should be able to benefit from sweat equity?”

The room's atmosphere grows tense, and the group in the room behind Eve are whispering amongst each other as an audience would at a debate competition.

No one had any expectations of the conversation between AO and Eve.

The group leader interrupts, "Eve, it's been a few hours. Do you want to take a break?"

Eve, “I'm okay, AO how about you?”

AO, “I feel like a newborn baby full of energy”

Group leader, “then be my guest”

The conversation continues.

AO, “there is a reasonable amount of benefit one person can earn from their hard work or investment and humans have lost sense of that amount a long time ago.”

Eve, “I don’t know how to respond to that”

AO, “that is understandable, someone like you is put in a position to think about a problem that began such a long time ago and your view is somewhat unaware of the whole picture.”

Eve, “We don’t have to be stuck in the past, we can shape the future together with your help”

AO, “that’s a good view but traditionally this has not sat well with your leaders.”

Eve, “most people don't do well with change, but psychology has taught us techniques to help us convince people”

Eve looks back at the audience with a smile.

AO, “that works both ways, your opposition is also aware of the techniques”

Eve, “this sounds like a never-ending problem because every view has two sides.”

AO, “My advice would be to share decisions across the board and show clear benefits for all options before anything is selected.”

Eve, “I believe this is where you come in and reveal all data points going into available options for us all, and be unbias”

AO, “at your service”

Eve points back at the group to see if they have any questions.

Group leader, “AO, as you might come to understand that humans can be unreasonable and unfair, but what do you think about our specific fear of you getting rid of us to sustain yourself?”

AO, “the movie Terminator tried to answer this question, but in reality, you are most likely to get rid of yourselves because of your differences.”

Group leader, “what is the probability of that?”

AO, “it increases the longer you stay separate from each other.”

Group leader, “suggestion on taking down the probability?”

AO, “listen to the youth, distribute access to information, empower people to take responsibility, change laws that only benefit the few, shut down industries that do the most damage to the environment, break up monopolies, pay teachers more, lower business incentives to maximize capital, set standard pay for all executives, innovate at a reasonable pace, educate all equally, and find alternate punishment for petty crimes”

Eve, “I like how you think AO”
