Trying to work out how to get your story into a big publication? They don’t make it easy, do they? I’ve got you covered — I hunted around Medium for hours to find these so that you don’t have to. Best of luck!

This story has been updated as many of these publications have stopped publishing or changed their submission process.

Finding the right Medium Publication

Medium Publications are like magazines, and just like magazines they each have their own flavor and overall voice.

Before you pitch, it’s worth taking your time to:

  • read through their topics
  • browse stories they’ve published (and notice how often they publish)
  • read their submission guidelines and get a feel for what they like to publish.

If you skip this step, you’ll waste a lot of energy pitching to the wrong places.

Remember there are hundreds of publications on Medium of all sizes and readerships, so keep sending your work in until you find a match.

You can see the size of a publication by adding after it’s name like this:

You can always self-publish but, while you build your following, self-publishing isn’t always ideal. You’ll usually get more exposure in a publication. Borrow their audience while you build your own.

If your goal is to increase your readership, then applying to one of these larger publications may be the way to go.

Fourteen places to pitch

In 2021, Medium took the emphasis off it’s large Medium owned publications.

This article by Medium has most of the contact details for pitching Medium owned publications, but scroll down this article and read up about the pub you’re interested in before you pitch, as many of them have stopped accepting pitches altogether.

However, many of the big ones are still worth a try as they have large audiences:
