A Cold Night in Denver

Sometimes it pays to mind your own business

It was early Saturday morning, The two-bedroom apartment was quiet. The apartment smelled of beer, marijuana, and sex. Richard Williams woke with a start and looked at his watch.

He threw off the blanket one of the women had thrown over his sleeping body. Richard didn’t stop to use the bathroom. His only thought was to get to his grandparent’s house, where he lived in the basement.

It was a long walk in the cold

He left the apartment and found his way to Colorado Boulevard. It was a surreal experience. The Boulevard was quiet, there were no other pedestrians, and there were few cars.

Richard shivered as he walked, the sky was cloudy with the snow that was hours away. Richard’s funk was shattered by the sound of squealing brakes and crunching metal.

Richard wasn’t the only one drunk that night

He stopped and turned around. A small car was overturned in the middle of the intersection. A middle-aged man in a well-tailored suit was standing by the car. “ Help me please,” he screamed.

“ Not my problem,” Richard muttered, as he turned to walk away, but something stopped him. He headed to the car and the screaming man.

Richard didn’t understand why the chauffeur didn’t call the cops

“ I have to get her back.” The man Richard assumed was a chauffeur. When he got close enough to the car, Richard saw a beautiful woman who seemed to be dozing.

“ She needs to be back before sunrise.” The chauffeur said as he crawled into the overturned car. “ Help me get her out, I have to get her safe before sunrise.”

“ Whoa, wait a minute,” Richard said as he took the cellphone from his pocket. “ I need to call 911.” The Chauffeur straightened; his demeanor changed. He was calm and all business when he drew the gun from the shoulder holster under his jacket.

Richard sobered up in a hurry

“ No cops, no Paramedics,” he said, with a tone that sent icicles down Richards’s spine. “ help me get her buried,” Richard stifled a heave as he followed directions and grabbed the woman by her legs.

They carried the woman’s body to a snowbank; they then dug a hole with a shovel from the trunk where they placed the body. “ One last thing before I let you go.” The Chauffeur said as he aimed his gun.”

“ Get in the hole and lie next to her.” Richard shook and started to protest until the chauffeur chambered a round. “ You should have kept walking, get in the hole.”

Twenty years old and living in his grandparent’s basement

“ Come on man, I want to get home, my grandparents will wake up and find out I’m gone and throw me out again, I don’t want to go back on the streets.”

Richard started to cry, then he got in the hole.

“ Why are you so cold?” Richard asked as he lied there shivering. The woman didn’t answer, but Richard screamed when she opened her eyes and reached out and grabbed him. Richard’s scream died as the woman opened her mouth and sunk her pointed fangs into his neck.
