The city of Neom in northwest Saudi Arabia, located in the Tabuk Province, aims to embody smart technologies and serve as a global tourist destination. The concept for the Line City was announced on January 10, 2021, by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia in a televised presentation. It is being developed under the direct supervision of the Prince himself. Today, Neom has entered new stages of development. This project, set to be completed by 2030, aims to be a fully green city with zero carbon emissions, accommodating 9 million people in a space stretching 170 kilometers in length and 200 meters in width. Some argue that this project, even if it reaches fruition, will be a dystopia.
What does NEOM mean?
“Neom” means “new” in Greek and “future” in Arabic. In Saudi Arabia, NEOM is referred to as the “New Future.” Saudi officials describe it as the “most ambitious project in the world.”
Where is the city of NEOM?
The smart city of Neom is located on the coast of the Red Sea in northwestern Saudi Arabia, in the Tabuk Province. It can be envisioned as a place that sets the path for entrepreneurship and innovation in the new future. This city is introduced as a new model for sustainable living, work, and prosperity in the market. It’s a forward-thinking mega-city, spanning an area 33 times the size of New York City, with a planned layout featuring 16 neighborhoods along the Red Sea coast.

Neom will be the world’s first city without streets, cars, and traffic, meaning more time for enjoyable things in life. A staggering amount of over $500 billion is being invested by the Saudi Prince in this visionary project. It’s planned in such a way that all major cities worldwide will be within an 8-hour flight of Neom. This city is being built using artificial intelligence and clean energy sources and will feature bullet trains and hyperloops, but residents will be encouraged to use bicycles. The dreamy climate of Neom has unmatched solar and wind potential, providing competitively priced renewable energy.
Neom City promises residents and investors a better life, where at night, the breathtaking view of a large artificial moon will illuminate the surroundings. The mirrored facade allows the city to seamlessly blend with its surrounding nature.
One of the surprises of Neom City is the establishment of a digital air, providing free Wi-Fi for all residents. In January 2019, Saudi Arabia launched a company called Neom to drive the activities of construction and employed three of the world’s largest consulting firms. These companies were McKinsey & Co, Boston Consulting, and Oliver Wyman.
In-Line City, services will be provided automatically and by AI and all daily necessities will be accessible within a five-minute walk, and an efficient public transportation network will provide fast travel across the city.
It promises residents and investors a lifestyle and a better life than the world. At night, Neom is likely to be illuminated by a giant artificial moon. The coastal line of the Red Sea is expected to be transformed by the authorities, and according to the plan, luminous sands will be added to its shores in darkness. Designs obtained by The Wall Street Journal depict details of wild plans for artificial rain, robotic servants, and holographic teachers. Neom is set to use “cloud seeding” technology to create artificial clouds that produce more rainfall than natural conditions in the desert.
To ensure the establishment of microclimatic spaces, the environment has been designed to provide optimal balance of sunlight, shade, and natural ventilation. Additionally, green open spaces throughout the city enhance comfort for residents, workers, and visitors alike. It is predicted that by 2030, over 380,000 jobs will be created.
