A Blueprint For Making Money in Your First Week on Medium
And Everything Else I Learned

I began writing last week on Medium.
Sure I only made $3, but that was with two stories and two followers!
Things can only go up from here.
To end your first week on Medium with a few dollars in your pocket there are a few things you have to learn.
The Week Before
The week before you begin writing on Medium, sign up for the Medium Partner Program. It’s as simple as linking Medium to a place you can get paid at. This includes linking your bank account or debit card with a third-party service called Stripe.
Do this as a prerequisite and give yourself a few days at least to get approved.
Week 1
My goal for this week was to write four stories (I started on a Tuesday). That’s all I really had planned. I didn’t expect to make any money but did want to try to gain a few followers.
I posted my second blog post on Wednesday morning and within a couple of hours, I got an email saying that the Medium curation team had read the article and chosen it to be curated.
I had no clue what that meant at the time. Let me explain:
Curation & Publications
In short, Medium has a curation team that reads a percentage of the articles published on Medium and selects those that meet a high editorial standard for curation. There’s really no secret sauce as to getting curated, but there are guidelines that you can read through in a matter of minutes to help your chances a bit. Do this, and be sure your stories follow the guidelines.
Being curated means that Medium will feature your story in topic pages, emails, and possibly even across their homepage.
This is golden!
This is the goal.
You want to get your stories curated. So be sure to familiarize yourself with the guidelines and follow them.
What else happens after curation
After my story got curated, I got “private notes” from two publications. They both encouraged me to submit my story to their publication. And one happened to be the second-largest publication on Medium!
When these offers are extended, you are also granted “writer” status in these publications and have an open door to add your future articles to these publications. This means you don’t have to submit a draft. You can publish your article and then add it to their publication if you desire (they still have to accept it).
Sweet.
And just a side note, I realize that these are generic, “canned responses” from these publications. I was not exclusively chosen, I realize that.
But I assume what happens is that these publications browse certain category pages and send messages out to the relevant articles inviting them to submit. Since they are being featured, it means they have already been curated.
Whatever happens behind the scenes, this was a great thing for me. I instantly added it to their publication, got approved, and I have since gotten almost 300 views on this one article.
Compare that to publishing to my two followers!!
My Second Article
The second article I wrote also got curated! I submitted this also to The Startup and it has since gotten almost 300 views.
Followers
Another goal of mine was to gain a few followers this week. This never would have happened if I didn’t get an article curated and in a publication.
I was able to gain six followers in my first week and was happy with this.
Summary of Lessons Learned in My First Week
- You want to get articles curated. This is a vital goal. Not all will, but two of my first ones unexpectedly did.
- If the above happens you will get offers to submit them to publications. Submit to the biggest (and of course most relevant to your story).
- Share your stories on social media. Be sure to use the Friend Link. This will allow them to read without the paywall restricting them.
Goals For Week 2?
My goal this week is to write a consistent 5 articles. In addition, I’m working to submit one of these to Better Programming and one to Better Marketing in hopes to open the doors there and gain more exposure.
Discussion
How was your first week on Medium? Your first month? What unique story do you have (or not have)?
