True Story
A Bizarre House in Canarsie and the Secret It Hid for Decades
It was perfect for a large family of seven, but not without its quirks
I wrote this for a Creative Writing course as told by my father who lived through it. I made a few embellishments to the story, then I ran it through Chatgpt four different times until the story line, drama, and suspense were close to the original.
Salvatore and Anna Trevino, upon finding a house within their budget, didn’t question the unusually low rent. This spacious, old house in Canarsie, Brooklyn, with ample room for their five children, had its peculiarities, which they’d soon discover.
Affordable housing hard to find
Following the Great Depression’s lengthy grip on the nation, securing decent housing was challenging. Consequently, they promptly paid the rent in cash for this remarkable house. It nestled on a tranquil side street with minimal traffic, as cars were scarce. Within walking distance, a grocery store was available, and trolley cars frequented the nearby avenue.
They adored the house and its location, despite its idiosyncrasies. Soon after settling in, peculiar incidents began to unfold, such as doors closing seemingly on their own when no one was present. Salvatore initially suspected their children of playful tricks, but being a rational person, he sought reasonable explanations.
Perhaps drafts from the winter wind were responsible, he thought. He didn’t want to doubt the bargain they believed they had found.
As weeks passed, these strange occurrences became more frequent. Salvatore, still skeptical, attributed them to fatigue and overwork, dismissing them. Then one morning, Tony, their ten-year-old son, divulged a disconcerting experience.
He claimed to have seen the image of a man’s face in his bedroom mirror the night before. The lips appeared to move, as though the figure attempted to communicate, and it was someone Tony couldn’t recognize. His father, though inwardly anxious, reassured him it was just a nightmare.
Regrettably, Tony’s visions persisted, causing him to fear his own reflection and sleep with a sheet partially covering his face to avoid glimpsing the talking visage. When he recounted this to his parents, they dismissed it as recurring nightmares.
More strange events
Salvatore, however, grew increasingly disturbed. He himself had encountered oddities, like finding the coal stove’s door closed when he was sure he’d left it open. He pondered whether ghosts could close doors, though he regarded such thoughts as absurd. He attributed the eerie sounds to the house’s age and drafts.
Subsequently, he considered ceasing their habit of listening to spooky radio broadcasts at night, a favored pastime for him and his wife. He chose to shrug off these peculiar encounters and continued with his daily routine. Anna carried on with her cooking, and the children enjoyed their spacious rooms and play area.
Life appeared to return to normal until one morning when Tony discovered a crisp, new one-dollar bill on his dresser, placed right under the mirror where the mysterious image had appeared.
A dollar was a substantial sum for a ten-year-old in those days. Tony feared his father would accuse him of theft. Anxious, he confessed the discovery to his parents, who, with concern, questioned him. Salvatore’s initial response was stern, suggesting they needed to address potential theft in the family. However, Tony vehemently denied any knowledge of the money’s origin.
No explanation
Up until this point, all strange occurrences had explanations or were brushed aside. Yet, money doesn’t materialize on a child’s dresser from thin air. Tony had occasionally received small rewards from the elderly neighbor across the street for helping her, perhaps including a dollar, which he had absentmindedly left on his dresser the night before.
However, Salvatore, now deeply concerned, felt compelled to confide in his wife about the strange events.
Anna, surprisingly, broke down in tears, revealing the secrets she had kept hidden for fear of being ridiculed or deemed crazy. She was apprehensive that her husband might decide to abandon the beautiful old house she had fallen in love with.
Reluctantly, she shared her experiences of cabinet doors closing, the cat clock on the wall malfunctioning, and objects mysteriously relocating. Upon comparing stories, they concluded it was time to delve into the house’s history and arranged a meeting with the property manager.
Time to find out the truth
The following day, they gathered their children and took the trolley to the property manager’s office, uncertain of what to expect. When they recounted the bizarre occurrences, the property manager’s demeanor shifted drastically.
He turned pale and retrieved an old newspaper article from his desk drawer, featuring a group of bank robbers who had been apprehended in that very house. As he showed them a picture of the four men, one of whom matched Tony’s description, Tony exclaimed, “That’s the man in my mirror!”
According to the article, during the Depression, this gang had perpetrated bank heists across the country and had suddenly gone into hiding. They were also linked to several murders. Two of the robbers were killed resisting arrest in the house, one was captured and sent to Alcatraz. The fourth man somehow escaped and was never found.
The money they had stolen was never recovered, despite a search of the house conducted shortly after the arrests. Rumors of the house being haunted had circulated over the years, but the property manager had not disclosed this, as he had not believed in such tales.
Now, with the Trevinos providing detailed accounts, he decided to report the new information to the police, leading to a lengthy investigation.
Throughout the investigation, the Trevinos stayed in the house. They believed if the money were found and removed, the paranormal activity would cease.
During this time, there were no strange occurrences. Investigators probed for hidden spaces, opened old trap doors, tapped on walls for hollow spots, and even excavated suspicious areas in the yard. Despite their efforts, no money was uncovered.
Search turns up nothing
As abruptly as it had begun, the investigation was terminated. Besides yielding no results, it appeared those involved in the search were experiencing a series of misfortunes, including illness, injuries, and accidents.
Word spread, attracting curious neighbors who eventually lost interest as the investigation led to no significant discoveries. Shortly after the case was closed, the eerie events in the house resumed, continuing to torment the Trevinos.
As they contemplated finding a new home, Salvatore recalled a thought which had crossed his mind amidst the chaos. He remembered noticing the cellar was smaller than the upper levels, pondering the potential hidden spaces behind its walls. He kept this idea to himself but considered the possibility of exploring it in the future, pending permission as they didn’t own the house.
Now, as he was deciding whether to reveal his idea to Anna, he wondered about the mysteries concealed behind the wall. What if there was merely an insignificant cellar or empty space behind those walls?
The tantalizing prospect of discovering something extraordinary compelled him to move forward.
He decided to discuss it with his wife. Her initial response was that of reluctance. She wasn’t sure if she could endure another round of uncertainty and fear. She suggested they simply leave the house. Salvatore, filled with excitement and determination, argued that the potential revelation could be worth it.
He believed exploring behind the wall might hold the key to unraveling the house’s mysteries, and since they were planning to leave anyway, there was nothing to lose.
What’s behind the wall?
Anna, after contemplation, agreed with his proposal. They decided to contact the police and seek their opinion on the matter. The police responded promptly, sending an investigator and an architect to assess the situation.
They examined the interior and exterior of the house and confirmed the existence of an inaccessible section within the property. Special equipment was brought in to excavate the foundation’s surroundings.
Initially, they found nothing significant due to the neglected yard’s overgrowth. However, their persistence paid off when they discovered a hidden trap door buried in the ground. This door, camouflaged and heavy, led to a staircase descending toward the cellar. Salvatore anxiously watched as the police and contractors descended the stairs, disappearing from view.
With bated breath, Salvatore followed them, descending the staircase himself. To his surprise, they were attempting to breach another large metal door locked from the inside, with no apparent means of unlocking it from within.
The fire department was summoned, and they arrived with the necessary tools to open the door. As they finally succeeded in unlocking it, they discovered a vast space that resembled a bomb shelter, almost like a vault.
Within this space were shelves stacked with various boxes, bags, bank bags, stacks of old, desiccated bills, suitcases, tools, tables, chairs, a portable toilet, water jugs, dishes, flatware, rusty cans of expired food, and an antiquated can opener.
But the most shocking discovery awaited them in the corner: the dried-up, nearly mummified body of a man, unmistakably sporting a mustache, clutching a handful of fresh, crisp, brand-new dollar bills.
This man was the missing bank robber, who had met his demise within the vault, entombed by his own greed.
