A Birthday, Heart Surgery And The US Elections.
Will Biden triumph over the President, and who cares anyway? For sure my wife trumps Trump and Biden.

Today is a day of very mixed feelings, good, bad and indifferent. First off it's my wife's birthday and this morning I gave her the mandatory chocolates, lovely red roses and a cute origami birthday card. She was so touched she teared up a little and I realised just how important it is to attend to what at times might seem inconsequential but in fact is anything but. A little means a lot.
Lurking at the back of my mind, over-shadowing the early morning sun, is the ever constant thought that on Tuesday I will be going into hospital for a heart operation. I am not looking forward to it in the least. It is not so much the operation that bothers me so much (though it does) as the fact that I will be in physical isolation from my wife for anything from three to ten days. Of course, we will get through it as best we can, it could be a sight worse.
The indifference I feel is towards pretty much everything else that is going on in the world. None of it matters to us. We go about our business as usual, my wife with her work at the hospital and me with my writing. I worry more more about my stats than I do about those of the US elections. And I have no doubt that a great many American citizens are the same, they just want to get on with what is happening in their personal lives.
It is not that I have no interest in world events, it's just a case of priorities, of what matters the most to me and my wife in the here and now and over the next few days. Everything else is just a distraction, sometimes a welcome one and sometimes not.
The talk is all about who won, Biden or Trump. Liverpool FC or Manchester United. Whoever won the match gets to run the game. It matters not which side has got the better manager or players, that is all totally irrelevant. When people vote they make an ideological choice and vote for the concept not the man.
A dyed in the wool Liverpool or Manchester United supporter will not change which side he supports just because this season the other side has got a more charismatic manager or his own side have suddenly got a first class clown running the show.
The only part of the electorate which can make a difference is the floating voters. It is they who can tip the balance either way and determine who loses and who wins. Having said that, it is not about whether the democrats or the republicans win, it is about Team America and Team World.
It doesn't help to demonise either Trump or Biden, they will achieve that all by themselves with what they say and how they behave. All attacking the leader of either one or the other will do is simply stoke up ill feelings. This in turn will merely exacerbate the divisions.
Trump may well be a monster, but he is their monster and they will do anything to defend their mascot. Far better to let things run their course, legal actions and political chicanery will be far better allowed to play out and reach their natural conclusions. What we have to do is try to look beyond the fall out and hope for a better America and a better world, whichever way the tossed coin lands, heads or tails. In a way, it is a calculated risk and it could go either way, it could be a good thing or not.
And now I am faced with my own problems. If I do not have my operation next week I could die. If I do have it, I could die. It is not a pleasant dilemma to contemplate. I have decided to go ahead if only to improve my quality of life in the here and now, and the possibility of extending my life by several years. Exactly how things will turn out nobody is really sure.
The only thing I do know is this, you forget your wife's birthday at your peril. It's only some boxes of chocolates, a few roses and a card, but it is no calculated risk, it is a dead cert. Fail to deliver on that one and for sure you will die a million deaths. In that respect, none of the other stuff matters not a jot. Happy birthday darling.
