My Publication Has Been Successful

When I joined Medium in December of 2020, as with all things new, it took me awhile to figure out the system and to get my feet wet. After learning about publications, I immediately searched for ones related to gardening and birdwatching. Much to my surprise, I didn’t find much. Really? Doesn't anyone care about these interests? I was initially disappointed, however, I then realized that this was a big opportunity to give Medium writers and readers a home for these topics.

About a month later I stared the Gardening, Birding, and Outdoor Adventure publication. The response was slow at first, but now a year or so later, it has caught on big time and I pleased that so many follow and/or write articles. We sometimes get multiple articles per day to publish.

Taking a look at the stats, there are now about 255 followers and 80 writers! It makes me feel good that so many have found a home to write about and read about their gardening, birdwatching, and outdoor adventure hobbies. I would like to thank all of the followers and writers. I can’t mention all of you by name, but I will list a few.

First of all, I want to thank Kim Zuch for being my co-editor helping me with reviewing and publishing stories. You have been a tremendous asset and continue to contribute great articles as well.

Then there are the writers. A big thank you to V. Bray, Ed-iT, 𝐆𝐫𝐫𝐥𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭, scientist & writer, John Welford, Katie Michaelson, Ken Martin, LucianoSphere, Patsy Collins, Randy Runtsch, Donna Brown, Rowan Ambrose, Mark Tulin, Ryan Elizabeth, Keri A. Johnson, Crystalclearcandace, BothSides, and K. Barrett.

These are just the writers who have submitted articles since January. I look forward to more stories of interest from all of the writers.

Finally, thank you also to the followers. I’m glad you are enjoying the publication and the many great articles.

As many of you know I participate in the GBBC each year. I wrote a few articles about the GBBC including this summary. This is a very worthwhile project which provides valuable data regarding bird population numbers and locations. Today I received an email from the GBBC with these final results of the count:

  • 7,099 species of birds identified
  • 192 participating countries
  • 359,479 eBird checklists
  • 298,208 Merlin Bird IDs
  • 141,990 photos added to Macaulay Library
  • 384,641 estimated global participants

This is just phenomenal. Did you participate?
