A Basque, Three-Colour Patience Game

Mystery, Mustery, Mastery, Memory, Manoeuvry

I am still learning new things from this Basque three-colour patience game, and I learned it 30 years ago, — from my Basque girlfriend, Nikane.

It involves Mystery cards; Mustering in Suits and Runs; Manoeuvring from all directions; Memory of what’s lost down in the pile, and Mastery of logic.

It can be counter-intuitive, for example, having more cards piled on the Runs actually gives you more potential to make space and manoeuvre. One of my favorite ditties is: “More Stuff In!”

As far as addictions go, this game is Queen, and it keeps the brain fresh.

Though it is hard to win it, it is easy to learn the basics, and I promise you’ll never tire of it!

The gods favoured me here, what an excellent game this turned out to be to explain the rules.

**Aces up! Build up the banks in suits.**

**KINGS OFF the board! A Basque deck has only 48 cards. When you meet a King, remove it to the side.**

Three-Colour

Three-colour means that EITHER the 9 of Spades OR the 9 of Diamonds may go onto the 10 of Clubs here.

The only 9 NOT allowed on the 10 of Clubs is the 9 of Clubs.

Choices, choices…. Which 9 will I move?

A no-brainer at this point in the game, because though a vital Ace might be hidden in the Mystery cards, a Space is golden. Having Spaces is key to Manoevering.

**ANY uncovered card may go into a Space, including the top card from your four banks of suits, ( built onto their Aces.)**

The Rule:

ANY uncovered card may move, and ONLY uncovered cards may move. Let’s call them free cards.

An appropriate free card can move from anywhere. It can move on to the end of a three-colour Run, OR to the top of the Suit Banks (the Aces), OR into a Space.

Where is the rest of the deck?

**Here it is. Turn the next card over onto the right hand pile one by one. Another Ace up!**

**I am going to keep turning the pile.**

**Oh yes, we want to save this 3! Lucky we have a Space. But before we move it up to the Space, I'll just see what's under it--It might be a** 4.

**A 5. It can go on the 6 of Diamonds, so I am going to cover the 3 with it and see what is under the 5 first.**

**5 Diamonds onto 6 Hearts now, and pile up the banks of clubs and spades**

**Aim to get the 9 Spades up into the banks, put the 9 Clubs in it place instead....use the 7 Clubs to get the 2 Spaces you will need in order to do that.**

**There are only 8 cards in the reject pile, and 4 Spaces**

**3 in the pile and potential Spaces to spare!**

Don’t forget to shuffle the Kings back into the pack!
