A Balanced Life is a Happy Life

Tom Krause, Leadership Coach, Five Capitals

Tom Krause wasn’t always a leadership coach. Like many of us, Tom started his career climbing the corporate ladder. But after years of working as a market researcher for some of the top brands in the U.S., Tom found himself burned out and seeking a new direction. Sure, he had a great job and the work was challenging, but it didn’t bring him the same fulfillment as it used to and it was affecting all parts of his life. That’s when Tom turned to leadership coaching to help him find an answer. Fast forward three years and Tom is now helping others grapple with the same problems he was facing in the middle of his career. He is happier, healthier, more fulfilled and spends more time with his family at their home in Waseca, MN. He also has more time to pursue his passions, one of which is off-road motorcycle racing. “We all need coaching at some point in our lives,” says Tom, “the experience was so transformative for me that I was motivated to help others do the same.”

Tell me about Five Capitals. What is it?

Five Capitals is an accredited executive coaching organization that specializes in helping business leaders grow. We say our purpose is to help you find yours. We don’t believe you can or should separate work and home so we help leaders find ways to bring their lives into balance. We do this primarily through coaching sessions, either one on one or group, and facilitated workshops (e.g., strategy and planning sessions, culture workshops, etc).

Tom Krause, Leadership Coach

There are many executive coaching companies. Our differentiation is that our fundamental principles (i.e., the Five Capitals) are biblically based. Even though about half of our clients wouldn’t consider themselves religious, they appreciate the perspectives, processes and tools we use. The Five Capitals, in order of importance are Spiritual, Relational, Physical, Intellectual, and Financial. As you might guess, many of us focus on Financial first and this causes us to have a deficit in the other capitals. During COVID, Relational capital (the amount of energy we put into relationships with others) has suffered for many.

What inspired you to become a Leadership Coach? What motivates you to want to help others lead?

I hired two executive coaches and they were enormously instrumental in helping me change course in my life. I was in corporate life for over many years for companies such as Pillsbury, Best Buy, Advance Auto Parts, Post Consumer Brands and United HealthCare. I loved what I was doing for 20 years and then gradually started to lose fulfillment. I wasn’t performing as well anymore and knew that I needed to change but just didn’t know how to get out of the rut I was in. I also knew I had to get honest with myself and make some tough choices. That is a lot easier when you have a coach both helping you navigate but also holding you accountable. Coaching changed my life so much I wanted to pass it along and feel very much called to do it.

How do I know when I need a Leadership Coach?

We’re all in need of coaching at times. The higher you go in any organization and the better you perform, the more coaching you need. Ask any CEO support group, sports team or successful entrepreneur. As you advance, decisions are bigger, impacts are greater and it’s lonely the higher up you go.

But in general, a sign that a coach can help is when you feel out of balance, want to make a change or want to accelerate your advancement. We’re stuck in ruts we either don’t know we’re in or we think we can self-help out of them. The goal of coaching is for you to discover new things about yourself, and take action to reshape your life. It’s similar to having a mentor, but with a structured approach to help you transform your life.

Getting more specific, these are some of the questions that I have helped my clients grapple with. You can see that they vary widely based on individual circumstances, but they can all be addressed with the help of a leadership coach.

  • I need to decide if I’m leaving or I’m staying
  • My business is ready to scale but I’m not sure how to do it
  • How do I get my team to work better together?
  • How do I use my strengths to lead better?
  • I’ve lost my confidence and purpose. I need to get them back.
  • I’m tired and buried, but I can’t get out of this rut!

Tell me about your approach

We use a 3-step model of Assess, Coach, and Grow. But it’s a custom program for each client. Our Assess phase often includes personality assessments but also includes our foundational assessment called the Prioritized Life Assessment that gauges how well you are currently balanced and focused in your life. Out of that assessment we create plans to help clients continue their focus or shift resources (or capitals) elsewhere. For example, we often find a leader is doing well with their Financial Capital but poor with their Physical or Relational Capital. He or she doesn’t take time to take care of themselves and keep their relationships healthy (personal and professional). So, we often advise them to use their Financial Capital to invest into their health and relationships.

What sorts of challenges are you tackling with your clients right now? Is there anything peculiar or different about the current circumstances that people need help with?

Most clients have some sort of COVID-driven issues. Some are having to completely revamp their business strategies around manufacturing and supply chain management. Some are having more personal problems with spouses or family members that need to be resolved before they can perform well at work. Others are struggling to connect meaningfully with their teams now that many are working remotely. On the other hand, this has been a positive time because many of our clients are using some of this forced seclusion time to reflect.

COVID is forcing us all to get better at technology. This helps in a way because my clients are spread throughout the US and Zoom calls have been my primary approach to meeting even before COVID hit.

How do you help people change for the long-term? Meaning, use the tools you provide them over time rather than revert back to their old ways?

As leaders, we encourage them to pass on the tools they use to others, to coach others in their organization or sphere of influence. Once you become the teacher, the lessons and behaviors are much more sticky. These are life skills that will stay with you forever and that you can apply in other situations. So it’s important to practice them, teach them and incorporate them daily.
