A 100-Word Drabble: A Short Walk with Death

Suzie and Sarah’s mother was ill, so she told them to ask someone to walk them home after church, as they’d have to pass the graveyard, which she knew scared them.

DALL·E 2024–01–04 19.15.15 — A man and two young girls walking past a cemetery near dark.

As the sun was setting in the West, two young girls were walking alone past the cemetery.

A stranger was walking past, headed in the same direction.

One girl stopped the passing stranger and asked, “Sir, would you walk with us? We’re just coming from church. I’m Suzie and this is my sister, Sarah. Usually, our mother walks with us, but she is sick.”

The man replied, “Why yes. I used to be scared here at night, too. I’m Willie. Pleased to meet you.”

Suzie asked, “Is your home near here?”

He pointed at the cemetery and answered, “Just there.”
