Where did I discover ancient wisdom? Deep within greyhounds’ gazes.

Mr. Berns is a greyhound. He is a retired racer from the US with a lineage spanning four thousand years as the breed is believed to have originated in ancient Egypt.

With every greyhound we’ve had the privilege of caring for, they have bedazzled us with their eyes. Not just the colour or texture of them, but the deep knowing-ness I feel they have.

Berny’s, in particular, are striking. The caramel orbs are rimmed with what looks like a special effort in the mirror every morning to apply his kohl eyeliner exactly so.

He’s only been a part of the family for less than a year. We are still getting to know him, so his personal mysteries are still unravelling. His layers continue to slough off every month, his true self slowly, shyly being revealed.

It’s one of the greatest things about a retired racing greyhound. They show you who they are on their timeline and no sooner. The trust built is beyond measure and to receive it is a great honour.
