9k Views? 2.9k Reads? In 1 Week?

Photo by Kelly Sikkema on Unsplash

Back to another article of the same storyline I have been into for about a week or more🙌. I am back with another amazing article to share with new writers on Medium. I hit another record on Medium. While this can be a puny achievement for successful writers, I hope this will be helpful for new writers on Medium.

I checked my Gmail this morning. Yet another email with good news. It sent me a weekly writing summary from March 2 to March 9. Any guess how many views, reads, fans, and responses I got? I got a total of 9k views, 2.9k reads, 672 fans, and a total of 211 responses. Here’s a screenshot of my weekly writer summary sent from Medium —

Yes, this isn’t a big achievement. A lot of writers are getting hundreds of thousands of views weekly. Yet, I love to celebrate even a small achievement. I am happy! Very happy. I’ve been able to reach a total of 9k views in one week. That’s huge for a writer like me with fewer followers and on top of that I am not a native English speaker. English is my second language. And I love to converse in English. I love reaching people out there with my writing. And this achievement never kills my enthusiasm.

Apart from the views I got, the responses I received even made me feel that I am not alone in my writing journey🙌. Such a huge response in a short time. 211 responses from readers! 99% of those responses were all positive. So far, I’ve got only 3–4 negative feedbacks in my entire journey on Medium which isn’t destructive but constructive (as I always think that way).

What’s my biggest fear?

As I’ve already mentioned English is my second language. And the flow doesn’t come naturally. If you asked me what’s my biggest fear in writing, I would say someone(a native English Speaker) badly criticising me for my bad English. So far not one, not even one native English speaker has written a single negative comment. 100% of them were constructive🙌. Thank you!

Another fear of mine is typo errors. As a busy guy with my studies(I am from a Science background), I don’t have the luxury of time to check typos or look at grammatical errors. 40% of my writings are all write-once and published without editing or checking grammar errors properly. And I never plan too much about what to write. Just look at this article where it started and where it went😅.

What’s my small advice for beginners?

I’ve been into writing about growing on Medium this week. I’ll do the same in this article too. I’ll provide some strategies that I’ve used to get 9k views this week. I can’t assure you of getting the same views after you apply the strategies but I can assure you that this will somewhat help you in getting more views or even more than 9k.

1. Write an engaging headline

The first impression of readers comes from the headline. If you write a better headline that is attractive and captivating then the first job is done. Read more on how to write an engaging headline here.

2. Write quality content

Focus on quality. That’s where impressions come from. The better you write the more engaged you will attract.

3. Keep your article short and to the point

If you can’t take readers through the article for long, then it’s better to minimize the length of the article. A 3–4 minute read-length article is decent.

4. Engage with others’ article

The more you engage with others’ articles the more transparent you will be and the more views you’ll get.

How to improve the read ratio?

If you see my stats, my read ratio is just 32%. To improve this ratio your article should be interesting and of quality. Another important thing to remember is don’t do clap-for-clap. There are a lot of people who don’t read your content and they will just view it and clap for it. Instead, focus on organic.

I’ve already written several articles on how to grow on Medium. You can check out my previous articles on the same topic. The only advice I have for new writers on Medium is to not give up. Follow your favourite author and decode their writing styles and find out which of their articles are getting viral.

Last advice — Don’t do click-baiting, and write consistently.
