I’m going to share something about goal achievement that not many people know. This knowledge has helped me:

  • Write my first draft of my book in three months
  • Quit my job with no backup plan
  • Make a living writing and coaching others
  • Fall in love with life in the deepest way I know.

Before I get to this secret, let’s discuss how we normally go about achieving goals. Let’s use losing weight as an example:

Starting the Goal

You set a goal to lose 10 pounds in 2 months. You get motivated and pumped up. You tell your friends and family, and they are happy and proud of you. You decide that waking up early and going for a run is the best way. Early mornings have fewer people around to judge you, after all. The first few days go fine, and you are feeling good.

The Cold

Then one morning, you wake up to the sound of the wind slamming against the window, a chill in the air tickling your toes, and you retreat into your blanket. “It’s cold,” you tell yourself. “Maybe we’ll do it tomorrow morning.” The next morning, it’s equally cold. “I already ran three times this week,” you tell yourself. “That’s good already; let’s start again next week.”

Relapse

Satisfied that you did good work this week, you indulge in more portions of your delicious meals and enjoy light snacks and fizzy drinks. Two weeks go by, and you haven’t gone for a single run since that first week. Someone reminds you of your goal, and you tell yourself you need more discipline. You research discipline and find out it’s the will to keep doing something you don’t want to do until you like it.

Discipline — The Key to Success

You accept that this is what discipline is and strive to run tomorrow. That same evening, you go out with your friends and stay out very late. By the time you go to bed and the alarm goes off for the morning run, you feel too tired. A few weeks go by, and you’ve forgotten about the goal.

Cycle of Despair

Every couple of months, you are reminded of the goal, and you might get pumped up again, but it rarely lasts. And so the cycle continues over and over again.

Can you relate to this story?

Here are the Key Takeaways from the Story:

  • Telling people about your goal gives you a dopamine boost, making you feel like you achieved the goal without achieving anything. This is scientifically proven.
  • It’s easy to act on a goal when you’re feeling good, but what about when you’re feeling low or tired?
  • As long as you continue a lifestyle that is against your goals, the old you will always win. You cannot lose weight when your old habits are still controlling you.

Now, let’s finally get to the secret of how to truly achieve goals. I will demonstrate this secret using the same scenario as weight loss.

Future Me Discovery

You decide to lose weight because it would be good for you. You sit down and write down what that version of you looks like. You list their habits and determine that if you were that person who lost weight, you would run regularly and go to the gym. You go even further and think about the foods that you eat, but not only that, you imagine enjoying the food that the new you would eat. You go even further and consider how the new you would react to the junk food that the current you is eating and determine that he would be disgusted and would not even think about it. You consider your lifestyle and realize that you would like to sleep early and wake up feeling rested.

The Future Is Now

You determine the thoughts and beliefs the new you have and intentionally decide to embody this new version of you into the present you. You do this with a sense of neutrality and detachment as if the new version of you is just a natural part of who you already are. You eventually lose weight effortlessly and enjoy working out.

Key Takeaways:

  • The secret to achieving any goal effortlessly is to embody that which you want to achieve and bring it into your reality right now.
  • You need to go deep: thoughts, feelings, beliefs, attitudes, and habits.
  • When you do this, actions and steps arise naturally.
  • The only work you need to do is focus your attention and awareness on who you intend to become at any moment. For example, if I were looking to lose weight and I was presented with fast food, I would ask myself, “What would future me, who lost weight, do in this situation?”
