93-Year-Old Man Scales Half Dome

We all have plenty of time-until we don’t

We all have the leisure of time-until we don’t.

We all have all the time in the world until it’s taken away from us, by medical issues, family emergencies, or death itself.

Sometimes we just have to seize the moment and put aside our doubts and fears. We want to leave our mark on the world in a good way.

Live life to the fullest, no guilts, no regrets.

I heard an inspiring story last week about a 93-year-old man, Everett Kalin, who is perhaps the oldest man to ever climb to the top of Half Dome in Yosemite Park.

The Half Dome hike is a 14-mile round trip and takes 10–14 hours to complete. Even though it has cables to grip while you are climbing to the very summit, it is considered the toughest trail in Yosemite.

It is an extremely steep and strenuous hike.

Hikers have to gain 4,800 feet of elevation on the trails before even reaching the cables for the last 400 vertical feet. There are beautiful waterfalls to observe along the way, but they also make the boulder-strewn trail very slippery and treacherous.

The trail takes you past the waterfalls, through a designated wilderness forest, and up the side of a rounded granite rock with a sheer cliff on one side. It is not for the faint-hearted, out of shape, or people that suffer from vertigo.

People have died from falling, storms, and getting hit by lightning.

In 1865, a report by the California Geological Survey stated that Half Dome was “perfectly inaccessible, being probably one of the prominent points about the Yosemite which never has been, and never will be, trodden by human foot.”

This last 400-foot phase of the journey is so sheer you have to pull yourself up by the cables to enable you to reach the summit. It is considered by experts as one of the most dangerous hikes in America.

The Yosemite response and rescue team receives hundreds of emergency calls for help every year.

A 93-year-old Oakland resident, Kalin was accompanied by his son and 19-year-old granddaughter, Sidney Kalin, who posted a TikTok video of the family achievement that has garnered 15 million views so far.

Three generations of one family united in one glorious moment of attaining their goal, and they have the photos to prove it!

You can see some of the video footage on YouTube as well.

Just search YouTube about him and you can see an NBC News video of him climbing to the summit and relaxing at the top with his family. Amazing!

This same man, a retired professor, also skydived for the first time two years ago!

Death is a normal stage of life, and there is no getting around it.

But it is the last thing we will ever have to do in this life, so we have plenty of time to work on our bucket list.

The inevitable is bound to happen, sooner or later, so our best bet is to make the maximum use of our allotted time spans as well as we can and enjoy our lives to the fullest in the meantime.

Don’t put off that fun vacation you have always wanted to take, that hobby you wanted to start, that adventure you wanted to explore. Everybody has a bucket list, a list of things they always wanted to do in their lives but never felt they had the time or money for.

We all have the time-until we don’t.

Start working on your bucket list now, while you can enjoy it to the fullest. Life should be fun, not always a dreary grind like some people make it out to be.

We only have one life-enjoy it while you can. We are all connected…
