90% of my predictions about The Last Jedi were right
Two months before The Last Jedi’s premiere, I made 29 predictions about the movie. 23 became correct and 3 were undetermined or partly correct, for a prediction success rate of nearly 90%¹. This article describes the 29 predictions and how they compare to what happens in the movie.
SPOILER ALERT
1. The First Order will attack a Resistance base: DOUBLY CORRECT
This happens not only once, but twice! At the beginning, when they’re evacuating the main base, and at the end, when they’re escaping behind the old base in Crait. This is like the attack of Geonosis in SW2 and Hoth in SW5.
2. The attack happens on a desert planet: CORRECT
Like Geonosis and Hoth, Crait is a desert planet.

3. The attack will be led by Captain Phasma: WRONG
This prediction was based more on the trailers than the story structure. A good lesson to stick to story structure!
4. Poe will try to escape at the last minute: DOUBLY CORRECT
In both First Order attacks, Poe escapes at the last minute. First, from the First Order destroyers at the beginning, and second, when he confronts the big laser in Crait.
5. Rey will levitate things during a training on the Force: DOUBLY CORRECT
Not only does she levitate stones during a training with Luke. She also levitates them at the end, when saving her friends from a blocked passage.

6. Luke questions the Light Side of the Force: CORRECT
He explains to Rey how Jedis didn’t leave anything behind them because they were full of hubris.
7. Luke might even have turned closer to the Dark Side: CORRECT
It’s revealed that Luke thought about killing Kylo Ren.
8. Luke’s move away from the Light Side is based on his findings on the Journal of Whills and the Balance in the Force: PARTLY WRONG
The Journal of Whills and the Balance are some of the strongest motives behind what Luke thinks about the Jedis, but they didn’t push him to the Dark Side. His instinct to kill Kylo Ren did.
9. Rey has a psychologically hard experience inside a cave in the middle of the movie: DOUBLY CORRECT
She doesn’t have one, but two of these events. The first one is when she’s training with Luke and she transports herself. The second one is when she literally jumps into the cave of the Dark Side in Ahch-To and sees herself in multiple versions.
10. Rey will get closer to the Dark Side in that cave: CORRECT
Not only did she get closer to the Dark Side. She literally got into a cave of the Dark Side.
11. But Luke and Rey won’t be the only ones to turn towards the Dark Side: PARTLY WRONG
DJ does turn to the Dark Side, but it isn’t a moral turn, and he isn’t a key hero of the trilogy.
12. Rey will learn about her family: CORRECT
This one is especially interesting. When she believes she will discover her parents in the movie’s Midpoint, she in fact sees herself, which is a cryptic revelation about her family. Then, Kylo tells her that her parents are nobodies…
13. Rey’s parents might be Luke or Leia: UNDETERMINED
Despite what Kylo tells Rey, it isn’t clear whether that is settled or not. Given the mind connection between Luke and Leia, and the one between Kylo and Rey, it is still likely that a new revelation will appear in SW9.
14. Luke and Rey will have differences: CORRECT
So much so that they fight! Luke doesn’t want to go back to the fight and doesn’t believe Kylo Ren can be saved. Rey believes so, and is decided to leave Luke to save Kylo.
15. Rey will leave to meet her friends again: CORRECT
Rey leaves to save her friends, and she does that by flying into Kylo Ren’s arms.
16. Meanwhile, somebody’s falling in love: CORRECT
Yeah, that was Rose falling for Finn!

17. We will see a planet full of deception: CORRECT
As expected, Canto Bight was the planet of deception: gambling, deception of the racing animals, deception of the prison escape, deception of DJ.
18. Rey might use Jedi mind tricks: CORRECT
She breaks a huge rock with her mind and connects with Kylo Ren from a huge distance. Pretty impressive!.
19. Rey’s friends will be used as a trap: TRIPLY CORRECT
There are 3 traps in The Last Jedi: the beacon enables the First Order to track the Resistance in hyperspace, Finn and Rose are trapped by DJ, and as soon as Kylo Ren appears friendly to Rey, she leaves for him—not knowing it’s a trap from Snoke.
20. Some sort of mercenary will be involved in the trap: CORRECT
It was DJ! As expected, he was the mercenary heir to Jango and Boba Fett who trapped Rose and Finn.

21. A hero will fall into the trap
It was Rey… Rey fell into the trap laid by Snoke… And Finn into DJ’s trap!
22. Somebody will lose a limb at the beginning of the movie 23. And somebody else will lose a limb at the end: MISGUIDED
One solution that the director, Rian Johnson, could have used was to cut Rey’s or Kylo’s limb, like Anakin in SW2 and Luke in SW5. But instead, he decided to cut Snoke in half, like Darth Maul in SW1.
24. Leia will probably disappear: CORRECT
She disappears in space… Only to return! The fact that they didn’t change the story and kill her off at the end will make it hard for JJ Abrams in SW9…
25. Kylo Ren will have more doubts about the Dark Side: CORRECT
Kylo still has doubts about himself and the Dark Side. He still hates Luke for trying to kill him. Snoke still feels his conflict. And so does Rey.
26. Kylo Ren will also have his “cave moment”: DOUBLY CORRECT
Kylo goes through two self-revelations: first, his connection with Rey opens an alternative world for him, where he is not consumed by Darkness. Second, he decides to kill his master, Snoke.
27. Kylo Ren will face a Jedi in a lightsaber duel at the end of the movie: CORRECT
It was Luke!
28. But none of them will win…: CORRECT
Neither Luke nor Kylo Ren won in that lightsaber fight. Luke “escaped” like he escaped Darth Vader in SW5. This time, by not being there at all.
29. The universe will grow to maximum instability, without a clear winner between the Light and Dark Sides: CORRECT
There is not a clear winner. The First Order has lost its wise and evil leader, and with it two massive ships. The Resistance has escaped and is now in a position to rekindle the flame of hope in the Galaxy
¹ 88% prediction success rate based on 23 correct predictions and 3 wrong ones. There were also 3 predictions that are either undetermined or partly correct, which were extracted from the total of 29 predictions. Other predictions are doubly or triply right, but they were only counted once.
