9 Months on Medium: The Born of a Writer

Wow — yeah guys, I can’t believe it either it’s already been 9 months since I started my writing journey on Medium back on January 2nd! Time really does fly when you’re doing something you are passionate about.

I still remember feeling super nervous clicking that “publish” button for the first time on my very first article. I had no clue if anyone would even read my work, let alone like it. But that initial leap of faith kickstarted an incredible adventure.

It was a cold January morning and I had just spent over an hour painstakingly customizing my new profile. This was it — no turning back now. I was officially going public as a “writer” on the internet for all to see and judge.

After triple-checking there were no embarrassing typos in my first article, I hesitantly hit publish. “My Journey into Writing” was now live for the Medium community. I waited anxiously, constantly hitting refresh to see if anyone would read my work.

But, you know back then we couldn’t monetize our stories without the 100 followers milestone, so I worked on my followers count and it took me 21 days to reach 100 followers and then apply for the MPP.

Fast forward to today, October 3rd, and I’m sitting here with over 4.2k amazing followers supporting me, 175 published stories, 150k+ views, and a total of 150k+ reach across all my stories. Who would’ve thought! From a complete newbie to a Top Writer, my growth has surprised even myself.

Below you can follow my stats journey from Jan 2nd up to today Oct 3rd. From bottom to top. And, one thing, my story has never ever been boosted or chosen by the Medium staff as I publish this story. So those stats are the results of my own effort and the Medium algorithm.

Of course, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing. I’ve dealt with my fair share of writer’s block and self-doubt. There were days I stared blankly at the blinking cursor, wondering if I had anything valuable left to say. But I persevered, largely thanks to the warm Medium community and some friends(Katy Ramm, Ansh Singh, Prasanna Srinath Subhasinghe, Amalia) that I made out here, cheering me on.

Their feedback, comments, and encouragement on each piece kept me motivated to hit publish on the next story. And the more I wrote, the more comfortable I became in expressing my authentic thoughts and research on AI. My voice grew stronger and my confidence blossomed.

My hard work has also started to pay off financially after Medium approved my application (January 29th). I didn’t make it big for my very first month, $0.56, I remember my friend laughed at me, but I knew it was just the beginning of a whole journey.

And the next few months, I earned over $500.

Now I consistently gross over $400 a month from this writing. Considering I was making none at all.

Of course, impostor syndrome and doubt still creep up at times. Just last month I stared hopelessly at an empty screen, worried I had nothing valuable left to say as I challenged myself on 30 days non stop writing.

But, remembering my readers who depend on me to keep up on the AI track keeps me persevering through writer’s block.

Now my articles resonate with and impact hundreds of readers, I receive a lot of inspiring feedback and tips as well— it’s incredibly humbling. I’m so grateful to discover this platform, guys!

So for any aspiring writers out there hesitant to start their journey, I hope my story inspires you. That first step into the unknown is terrifying, but the rewards make it more than worthwhile.

Your distinct voice and story need to be shared with the world. Just take it one day at a time, and before you know it, you too can proudly call yourself a writer. Who knows what 9 months may bring, If a human being with all its complexities can be formed in 9 months, why don’t you give yourself 9 months to grow into the writer you’ve always dreamed of becoming?

I can’t wait to continue growing on this journey! As always, I appreciate your time for reading this story. THANK YOU!
