A Breakdown of My Medium Earnings
Based on the lifetime earnings stats

I love the new feature where you can order your stories by their total earnings. It was my suggestion, and Medium CEO, Tony, implemented it — how cool is that!
So now I can see easily which stories have done better than others, based on earnings. It’s alarming but not particularly surprising to see how many haven’t earned much at all. But that was to be expected, I suppose. More than a quarter of my published stories on Medium earned less than a dollar. A handful of stories did well.
The total number of stories I’ve published on Medium is 808. That’s the number still on the platform. I’ve published and deleted some, but they’re not included in the figures.
Here are the number of stories that fell into each earning bracket.
- Over $1000: one story
- Between $500 & $1000: one story
- Between $250 & $499: three stories
- Between $150 & $249: two stories
- Between $100 & $149: four stories
- Between $50 & $99: seven stories
- Between $40 & $49: three stories
- Between $30 & $39: 11 stories
- Between $20 & $29: 13 stories
- Between $10 & $19: 51 stories
- Between $4 & $9.99: 146 stories
- Between $3 & $3.99: 58 stories
- Between $2 & $2.99: 101 stories
- Between $1 & $1.99: 186 stories
- Less than a dollar: 221 stories
As you can see, the vast majority of my stories are low earners, with over 500 earning less than $3. It’s a big boost when you do get a story that does well, but it’s not easy to achieve.
You’re probably wondering which are my biggest earners. These are my top ten biggest earners…
- Blogger Who Made $6 is Sued for $150,000 over Creative Commons Image
- Has Greta Thunberg Gone Bonkers?
- People are Being Sued for Using Creative Commons Images
- Another Publication Shut Down For Violating Medium Rules
- These Medium Writers Ran Into Legal Problems When Using Images
- I’m Married To An Old Man — The 15-Year Age Gap is Showing
- Students Get $5000 Legal Demand for Using CC Image on a Blog
- I’ll Be 50 This Year — It’s Sobering
- I Was Propositioned By A Naked Man
- This Medium Writer Got a $1000 Legal Demand From Getty Images
These all earned over $100, but do remember that in order to get these winning stories, I wrote over 800 more stories (some have since been deleted) and of those, a quarter of my stories earned less than a dollar!
Also, these were mostly published under the old algorithm, so the same topics won’t necessarily do well again. I’ve found my recent copyright stories haven’t done well at all.
It goes to show that it’s better if we do Medium because we love it — not just for the income. Because it’s unusual for most people to earn a good hourly rate on the platform.
Fortunately, I do love it and that’s one of the reasons I keep returning daily, reading your stories and sticking around to share mine. I also dream of doing better in the long run — don’t we all?
I once calculated that my average earning per story is about $8-$11. Last month it was more like $4 but that was a bad month.
I think that average probably still stands, but as you can see, there’s more chance of a story earning cents on Medium than hundreds of dollars, so where to dedicate your time is something of a gamble.
