81,000 Followers And Still No Views

Medium is a strange platform sometimes

A recent post by Nicolas Cole really made me think about Medium’s future. I’m a huge fan of this platform, but I can’t ignore the warning signs.

Nicolas has over 81,000 followers. Mind-blowing number right? It dwarfs my 2400 followers.

What’s the outcome though? In Nicolas’ recent post, he shared a screenshot of his stats page. I was shocked to see that with his 81K followers, he doesn’t get more views than I do on a regular basis. Isn’t this crazy?

It goes to show you that followers as a number don’t mean much on Medium anymore. Instead, what you should focus on is a loyal readership, subscribers, and the community you’ve built. They come back to read and engage every time.

Still, are the golden days of Medium over? I’m usually optimistic. What about you?
