Summary

The web content provides strategies for writers to increase the visibility and readership of their previously published stories on Medium.

Abstract

The article outlines eight methods for Medium writers to revitalize their older content and attract more readers and potential earnings. It suggests sending stories to subscribers, deleting and republishing the oldest stories to give them a fresh date, adding stories to relevant publications, starting a personal publication for a specific topic, creating lists to organize stories, rewriting content in a new format or perspective, sharing stories on social media, and including links to related stories. The author also invites discussion on the contentious tactic of deleting and republishing stories, acknowledging differing editorial opinions on this practice.

Opinions

  • The author endorses re-engaging subscribers with older content by sending stories directly to them.
  • There is a debate on the legitimacy of deleting and republishing stories to gain more visibility, with some editors accepting it and others not.
  • Adding stories to existing publications or creating a new one can help reach a targeted audience.
  • Organizing stories into lists and rewriting content are seen as effective ways to repurpose and promote existing work.
  • Sharing stories on social media platforms is recommended for expanding readership and potentially earning through referral links.
  • The practice of adding links to related stories at the end of new articles is encouraged for cross-promotion.

8 Ways to Get More Eyes on Your Stories

And earn a few more $$$$$$$$$$s

If some of your stories haven’t had the attention they deserve, there are a few ways to bring them to people’s attention once again. Here are a few ideas…

  1. Send old stories to your subscribers. Stories published before you got any subscribers may not have been seen by them. So visit stories written before you got subscribers and press ‘send to subscribers’ from the little … menu.
  2. Delete and republish your oldest stories. This will give your story a new date, show it to your followers and increase reads. No, it doesn’t breach the duplicate content rule, because you’ve deleted the original, although I might leave it a day or two to make sure it’s GONE! (NOTE: Some editors don’t agree with this interpretation of the rules, so they may not let you publish your story in their publication. But others actively encourage it!)
  3. Add your self-published stories to publications. I created a list of some publications that accept published stories, but there are many more. You’ll find smaller publications are generally more open to adopting self-published stories than larger ones.
  4. Start your own publication. And put all your stories on a particular topic into your new publication. Then anyone interested in that topic can go straight there.
  5. Add your stories to lists. This is a different approach to collating stories on similar topics. If you want to put all your writing stories in one place, you can create a list called ‘writing’. Then add your lists to the foot of your articles.
  6. Rewrite your story. Create a short form version of your story and link to the longer one. Or rewrite it from a slightly different angle.
  7. Share your stories on Twitter or Facebook. You might want to share your referral link too, because that’s a good way to recruit new members to Medium.
  8. Add links to related stories at the foot of your new stories. A lot of people do this already, but not everyone does. It’s a good way of cross promoting your stories!

Now you can all debate the legality of point 2 in the comments below!
